U.S. Soccer has named Caleb Porter the head coach of the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team, effective immediately. Porter will lead the U-23 team in its quest to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games when they compete in CONCACAF qualifying in March next year.

So way back when Fuze was playing with our heads and putting out those “Be The…” challenges, one of them was regarding rebuilding the USMNT as president, and I do remember putting Porter as like head of youth development or something because of his extensive collegiate experience both as a coach and recruiter…I guess what I’m trying to say is well done Caleb Porter, he deserves a shot at a bigger position (I thought he was rumored to be a coaching candidate for DCU some time ago) and I think coach of the U-23 is absolutely perfect. Very curious to see what he does there, and I think his work there along with Klinsmann is going to help shape the USMNT for the next 5-10 years
Wow. Good news here. Are we sure Sunil Gulati is still running the USSF. This makes waaaaay too much sense than a normal Sunil Gulati operation. Someone take over his noggin and replace it with a, y’know, functioning brain? Whoever it is deserves our endying thanks.

I made the suggestion a while ago so I totally get credit. Go ahead, I’m waiting.

Though yeah, frankly I’m just as surprised…it almost makes too much sense, particularly for a Gulati appointment. Though I suspect that Klinsy has his finger-prints on this one: if he’s truly committed to re-building the USSF from the ground-up, this is a smart way of doing that because the U-23 coach (and other U-coaches) have access to the infrastructure that supplies the players of the future for us. And Porter has shown through his career as one of the top college coaches that he has surely recruited around the country and knows where to find talent (and probably still misses some spots), something that will be critical over the next few years as they look to expand the talent pool
