Marsch wants Hainault and draft picks for Ching
Montreal coach Jesse Marsch, according to Fox Sports, covets Canadian national team defender Andre Hainault and the framework of any deal will begin with him and also include draft picks.

Time to bid down
Because that isn’t happening. Marsh…seriously. Ching has said he will retire and the Dynamo FO has said that they won’t play this game. Let’s give away a 3rd or 4th round pick..sounds reasonable to me.
At this point
I’d offer Garey plus Freeman at the most. Forget giving him any picks. If he doesn’t like what he’s being offered, again, the Dynamo don’t NEED Ching. It’s a beautiful thing.

Fact is we won't lose Ching
He’ll be here in one way or another – the Impact will lose him. I wouldn’t give up Freeman just because he’s so versatile (though his salary would make me question that) – but I can’t see us giving up much. What a stupid move and a stupid “demand”. The only person to suffer is Ching. The whole situation makes it seem like Ching is being targeted to be hurt by all of this and it sucks. It sucks he wasn’t protected even though it made sense, and it sucked even though it made much less sense to pick him. It really sucks that a player that will not play for another team is being used as a bargaining chip because he’s an icon. It sucks that the coach that’s doing this had it in for Ching as an assistant coach and wrote negatively of him as a player.
It sucks – but I like Glenn Davis’s optimism and I do believe despite all of this there is no way we won’t see Ching as a captain in orange on opening day for us.
Nah
The FO will just go by the line “He wanted too much”, and we’ll buy it. They set Marsh up, and while Sounders and L’Impact fans don’t see it, it’s the truth. They knew he’d go for Ching. I mean, it’s the way the guy is. They get Ching’s salary off the books, and don’t have to mess with an uncomfortable retirement saga. They get Ching back in the FO next season. Yeah, it works out well when you actually sit down to think about it.

So
As Fuze said, I know we’ve seen comments from certain fans in the NW along with cabin-fever-riddled Impact fans, but when you really do analyze it, it seems personal disguised as business. Again, when Marsch made the selection it was either a personal slap or a personal slap disguised as a “shrewd” business move. I use air-quotes on the word shrewd because if Marsch really did think he was going to get Hainault as part of the ransom then dear Montreal fans: you’re in for a loooooong first MLS season. This shows a very poor understanding of players and teams that, while shouldn’t be all that surprising considering its his first year as coach (read: rookie mistake), it doesn’t bode well for the Impact. Hainault’s one of our core defenders and of course is rated highly enough that he’s become a regular selection for the Canadian NT. Now, I know that warms the cockles of your collective hearts in the cold, bitter winter of Quebec but there is no chance he is going to Montreal to play. Yes yes, we didn’t think the Dynamo FO would put Ching on the unprotected list but as cynical as it was, it was ultimately a smart move. But I’m honestly still having a hard time believing Marsch thought this would work.
I understood leaving Ching unprotected
I understood Marsch taking Ching (still a dick move, but understandable). Marsch is crazy with this Hainult + picks talk. Even if he’s starting high as some negotiating ploy there is such a thing as overplaying your hand. If that’s really his demand then the the Dynamo will just walk away and he’ll be stuck with an aging expensive striker who doesn’t want to be there.
The Dynamo aren’t going to offer any more than a late round draft pick or two. They don’t have allocation money to offer, and if Marsch wanted young players you can build around…well then he should have used that expansion draft pick on one instead of Ching.

THIS
a million times, this.
You summed up at least my feelings & take on this whole episode, and perhaps for the kommentariat here as well.
I get why the FO did what they did, and even Ching understand. And as you said, I get why Marsch did this but if its for his stated purpose (Hainault + picks) then he’s bat-crazy. And if you wanted young players, there were plenty available that could’ve been had on the cheap through the draft. It’s a ballsy move, sure, but General Custer had a ballsy move too.
I'm a bit dim
So can someone explain what exactly allocation $ is and how exactly it differs from cap space?
Tusen takk!
From Ives
Reporting on the Davy Arnaud deal to Montreal today:
(For those unfamiliar with MLS allocation money, it is essentially salary cap space, so when a team acquires say $100K in allocation money, that’s $100K the team can apply to its salary cap).
"We don't care who finishes second." -- Celtic's Peter Lowrie
Huh???
Then how can Houston lose over 400k in salary and not have any cap space???
Do they mean little space to sign quality players OR no cap space when they say Houston has no cap space???
Houston has salary cap space(without Ching on the Books) but they don't have any allocation money
Allocation Money can be applied to the cap, but it’s not the same thing as salary cap space. If a team has $100,000 in cap space and want to sign a player making $150,000 they would need to use $50,000 in allocation money to make it work. Think of allocation money as a credit from the league that can be traded and used as extra cap space.
That’s probably not 100% accurate but it’s a simplified explanation of it based on my understanding.

How about this?
Watson and Garey + late draft pick. Problem solved :) we lose dead weight and get better players in the offseason
If Marsch takes that
He really is trying to live up to the L’Impact moniker
