HEAD-TO-HEAD
ALL-TIME: First meeting.
RETURN MATCH: 8/27: Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Houston Dynamo, 6 p.m. CT
Coaches record: Teitur Thordarson v HOU: First game ... Dominic Kinnear vs. VAN: First game

The Dynamo welcome the expansion Whitecaps to Houston for the first time today with the Dynamo still looking for their first win of the season. I hesitate to label matches as "must wins" this early in the season but this is about as close as it comes. Houston must make a habit of getting full points at Robertson this season if they want to contend for a playoff spot. Yes, I say that all the time but it's a simple truth that will define the 2011 season.

Houston faces some serious questions heading in to this match. Can the offense create chances without Brian Ching in the lineup and how effective will Brad Davis be after struggling with a hamstring injury for most of the week?

Tall Hall has been bombarded in the past two league matches and the team can't keep asking him to keep them in matches. They must improve possession and find ways to challenge Vancouver's defense to prevent another shooting gallery type situation for their defense to deal with.

Dynamo Starting XI:

Lineup-card_new_medium

Dynamo Bench: Deric, Chabala, Robinson, Sarkodie, Clark, Dixon, Garey.

Whitecaps Starting XI:

What are the odds Jair Maruffo screws this match up?

70% chance of raining red cards, with a slight chance of absolutely screwed up game

Will be interesting to see if Bruin has started to settle in that forward position with all the time he is getting. Would be nice to see him finally pick up a goal today.

Agreed, it would be good for the confidence

Bruin is doing better in this match already. Getting himself much more involved than I have seen in the previous games

He’s been improving with each match, he looked good against SKC on Wednesday

Excellent Shot by Danny Cruz there, that is what the team needs more of, outside shots, so close to a goal

Dynamo pick up their first home goal of the season, Weaver collects trash at the back post on that one
But let one go passed them immediately after, cant let that happen

Hopefully Hainult is alright, got a pretty nice gash on his head after that collision

by Carl Morandi on Apr 10, 2011 6:55 PM CDT reply actions

yep, literally pouring blood

You usually don’t see blood flow like that outside of a horror movie

much better overall

Ball is moving much quicker, better job switching the ball into space. Another single case of sloppy defending keeping it from being a dominant half.

Oh, and Maruffo still sucks. A couple of mind boggling calls. Roxall should have a card for persistent infringement if nothing else. Had a run of 3-4 fouls in a row that took away chances. The play with Hainult in the box has to be a card for one of them. At least there hasn’t been a waterbreak yet

Cam Weaver will not find a better position to be in to put that ball on frame. He had miles of space with no one marking him on that.

by Carl Morandi on Apr 10, 2011 7:19 PM CDT reply actions

and then bruin couldn't get the ball to an unmarked Weaver

Makes me nervous when we don’t convert wide open chances

One thing I have noticed is Van is very trigger happy when it comes to shooting. They shoot whether they have a good shot or a bad shot. Particularly with the volley attempts. So even though they are getting very few attacking chances, almost all of them have had a shot taken

getting sloppy in 2nd half

Giving ball away too easily. As jacked up as Vancouver back line is we just need to be patient in attack and they will beat themselves

agreed, dynamo are not simply controlling the ball like they did in the first half. Maybe time for a substitution or two for some fresh legs

Feels like the Dynamo have took their foot off the gas a bit

MUCH better from Bruin there on that run. Just needs to learn to use more placement and less power on that shot.

great job to create space for himself

Looked a little too amped up for his first goal. I would love to see him get his first to help him settle in

WILL BRUIN WITH HIS GOAL, as I noted at the beginning of this game. He finally broke through. That is what I like to see.
Now, no more defensive lapses tonight, please!

So close Cameron, so very close on that run. Would like to see the replay if he really did get caught on the offsides trap.

by Carl Morandi on Apr 10, 2011 7:49 PM CDT reply actions

I think he was onsides

At first, I didn’t even question the call, but then I remembered that he got that chance from a dummy. In my mind, I was counting the dummy as a pass, which it is not, therefore I don’t see how Cameron could have been off when the intial pass was made. It only really matter for GD, but still.

Does Jason Garey seem a little hot blooded to you guys? He definitely has spirit, but is very physical. Does not seem to be afraid of cards or letting the refs know what he things.

Also Cruz should have done much better with that cross/pass where the goal was wide open. Luckily it looks like the Dynamo have wrapped the game up at this point.
