Sergio Koke Coming to Houston

Well Dynamo fans, nothing official on our end yet, but this was just posted on the official Aris website and it's very interesting:

Termination of collaboration with Sergio Koke

04/13/1911 19:48

ARIS FC announces the termination of cooperation with the footballer Sergio Koke to continue his career in MLS.

FC Aris Sergio Koke thanked for his contribution to date and his substantial contribution over the last five years the rise of the club. He wished success to follow his career and every personal happiness for himself and his family.

Is he on his way to Houston?

Honestly, we don't know yet but it sure seems like it's a real possibility. I'll keep you updated throughout the day as this story develops.

UPDATE (12:27pm)

Translated statement from Thanasis Athanasiadis, President of Aris:

"It is sudden. Board convened in the presence of all members. The claim was transferred from the player. It found that the circle has closed the group and wanted to go on loan to test in America. We refused.

The next solution was feasible, it was resolved to mutual obligations, with the encouragement of the player. Discussions are currently underway. The fact is that we are in the process so that the two sides to mutually disengage from their contract. It is important that the financial price.

One can not keep him if he is not available. In America the final phase of the transfer. The proposal came at the last minute. The proposal seems very tempting and we strongly expressed the desire to make it acceptable."

UPDATE (1:32pm)

Report from El Desmarque Malaga:

After nearly five years in Thessaloniki, the opportunity to cross the pond and try a new experience in the United States attracts Koke, who has been hired by MLS itself, which owns the rights to the players. The operation has been completed in recent days by José Contreras, Koke's brother and agent, in Thessaloniki. This agreement was signed Wednesday and Koke travel to Houston next week after passing through Malaga. Sign up to 2013 and receive a salary of around a million euros.

UPDATE (4:05pm)

MARCA is now reporting on Koke coming to Houston.

The Malaga Sergio Contreras "Koke" starts its fourth adventure abroad after announcing his departure from Aris Thessaloniki to play in the MLS. Former Malaga, Marseille and Sporting Portugal leaves the Greek side to play in the Houston Dynamo.

Deal appears to be done, just waiting on MLS and the Dynamo to announce it.

UPDATE (4/14 7:54am)

Yet another article saying Koke is on his way to the Dynamo.

Aris captain Sergio Koke bid farewell to the Thessaloniki club on April 13 after almost five years of service, to join MLS side the Houston Dynamo.

The Spanish forward is departing immediately to the US, as the MLS season is already under way, but made a tearful promise that one day he would return to Aris.

Just how serious is Koke about this move? He paid Aris out of his own pocket to secure his release from his contract. If nothing else, it sure seems like he's motivated to make the move to MLS.

OK Ginge, last time this happened, where I was off the Internet for awhile and then got on to see about Dynamo signing a player, it was the Ghanaian-who-shall-not-be-named. Now you’re trying to get me to snort up some Koke?!?!?

Ok dude, bring it on….

Wow...

Wasn’t this a wonderful way to hop onto the Dynamo Theory website today. Way to be on top of things as always Ginge.

Man…while I have said I want a CAM or F, I didn’t actually expect them to have a chance at either of them until the summer window. The possibility of an actual nose for the goal striker on the Dynamo who is creative and makes plays when needed. SIGN ME THE HELL UP!!!!!!!

Also, this jives with a few different things I've been thinking on...

One, it was said by Glenn Davis on his blog in a post to expect a move, signing, something today, because today is the last day the Dynamo can feasibly hope to get the paperwork in for a move and still give MLS offices enough time to process it before the Friday deadline.

Two, we all know they were after a forward. He’s Spanish, so they should feel he could bring in more of the Latino/Hispanic attention. Plus, you’re talking legit if a European is looking to come over BEFORE his 30’s.

Three, the Dynamo weren’t looking for a guy past his prime, and thus it passes the snort…I mean…smell test.

Okay, who’s going to start the Twitter Trend #Koke2Houston now?

If nothing else, it has aroused a lot of fan support from Greece for the Dynamo out of nowhere...

This is from a Aris fan on The Shin Guardian blog commenting on Koke’s performance with them:

Posted by antony on 2011/04/13 at 11:35 AM

“Hello to all from the capital of Macedonia,Thessaloniki in Greece! We say the city of God of war ARIS (Mars)!I have to tell you Sergio is a great player,in his first 2 seasons in Aris he was scoring with no mercy to the opponents! He was fantastic as a striker! The next 3 years his coaches placed him as an AMC and he wasnt scoring so much but he gave many assist to other strikers! We love him because he had been a good proffessional, always 100% for the team and so close to the fans!I m sure he ll do great there! He had also played for Malaga (ESP) and Marselle (FRA). I m also glad to communicate with people who are interested so much for footbal (socer) from a country that this sport is 4th or 5th in popularity!”

Interesting note about him being moved by his coaches to AMC/CAM. He can play either role, then, and is the type of guy overall (um…he can find the net when it’s wide open to him. Sign him, now. Lol) we want. He’s also creative…as a fox. See what I did there?

Then there's this from an Aris fan on bigsoccer Forum

“Koke does not have poor fitness, he is just not a very good athlete like EJ for example. He is quick, not for long runs but he can easily run from a defender without the ball and also go one-on-one.

His first 2 seasons he played as a real striker in a 4-3-3 tactic, then he was pulled back to play in a more playmaking role. He showed that he can play in both positions really well but he is better as a striker IMO.

He also had some physical problems a couple of times which made him drop form and it took a long time for him to start playing well again. He lost a lot of confidence as well when it didn’t go well, because he had a lot of pressure on him to perform well all the time.

Koke is loved like few other players. Because of his quality as a player but also because he showed so much feelings for the team. He cried today during the press conference when he announced his decision to leave.

I don’t think there are many forwards with his quality in the MLS. "

That’s passion not only for the game, but for the fans, the team, etc. If he wants the fan love, he’ll get it here in Houston that’s for sure. We love our men in Orange. Vive la Naranja!

The CAM thing is interesting

I don’t think the dynamo would play him there(and move Cameron), but at least it is a possibility. It might be interesting to see him play in a withdrawn forward role underneath Ching/Bruin/Weaver. Not really Dom’s style but just a thought. With the little bit I have been able to find out about him that seems like it might be pretty interesting.

In my quick google research I found a video from a couple of years ago. Highlight films are deceiving, but he seemed to have a nice calm finishing touch. A couple of nice plays bringing a ball down with a nice turn for goals. Doesn’t seem to be a bruiser, which is good because we have plenty guys who can out muscle a defender for a ball in the air.

I’m getting more excited, but I still don’t know enough about him.

Has the Watson deal gone through? Poor guys going to get lost in the shuffle if this DP move does go down.

by papabear on Apr 13, 2011 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm pretty sure the Watson deal was already done

But they haven’t officially announced anything. Usually a guy has to be signed to some sort of contract, or some mutual agreement has to be made, for a player to play in the Reserves games. Anything other than that would violate MLS contract negotiation policies. The paperwork may still need to clear MLS procedural stuffs at the HQ. We’ll see. Something tells me Friday or next Monday could be a very fun day!

I think Glenn Davis said the reserve game was being treated as an "extended trial"

I’m sure an agreement was in place though.

In employing my own Google-fu on this, I also noticed that on the Aris Wikipedia (fair warning) page, the team has had three coaches in the last three months. Koke has been the captain of the squad for the past two seasons, but it seems the instability there is telling him it’s time to move on. He turns 28 next week (according to his Facebook page) and seems to have generated a lot of fan support over the years.

Shin Guardian has a nice YouTube vid of him scoring goals. He seems to be a speedy guy, quick decision maker, playmaker sort of forward, maybe a true No. 9 who can play as a No. 10. I’m going to send Andy Brassell a note to ask about him on the World Football Phone In (or just on Twitter perhaps) and see what he has to say about him.

There's some talk of an appendicitis and needing minor surgery for it

So he’ll probably be out the first month or two for recovery time from that, but from what I’ve read he should be a starter once he’s match fit and comfortable being so.

I would hope so

I’m sure Dom will let him settle in somewhat slowly. Get used to his new teammates in training, use him off the bench at first. Remember he’s already played nearly a full season in Greece so it might be wise for the Dynamo to let him get some rest along the way.

Yep.

You could swap him and Chinger out. Let each play about a half once they are both match fit. Slowly bring them in as change of pace and style to one another.

Bruin

I’d prefer him to play as an attacking midfielder if he can and keep Ching (when healthy) and Bruin up front. Keep letting Bruin develop. All in all, really like the signing.

by Dustyn on Apr 13, 2011 4:10 PM CDT reply actions

I could see that working, except

He seemed less comfortable as a CAM with Aris according to what I read from the Aris fans. With that in mind, I don’t want to push him into a CAM role unless he is absolutely certain that’s what he wants or the team needs him to be. Right now, we can use him as much in a striker role as a CAM role. Heck, he could play a hybrid of both.

I still think he's a striker here

I think his style will compliment our other forwards nicely. Even though he’s not a speed guy I think his creativity and technical flair could pair well with our other forwards. I’m still sticking to my extremely pre-mature prediction that we will see him underneath the other forward, or at least be the one checking back to the mid-field to provide some play making and help drive the attack.

I do have some concerns. A couple comments about his fitness and not liking physical play are the most worrisome. I think the ability is there though. The appendix doesn’t bother me. That’s pretty minor these days. He could conceivably be recovered from the surgery enough to start training by the time all his work permit/immigration issues get sorted out.

by papabear on Apr 13, 2011 4:33 PM CDT up reply actions

A lot of the physical questions have been answered by the Aris fans already for me at least

All the Aris fans indicate he’s not slow or not physical, but it’s his play style. He’s a burster, who likes to use his flashes of speed when needed. Basically, he’s way beyond anything Dominic “Which way did it go, george?” Oduro could hope to be.

As for his lack of physicality, it was the Greek league, and he wasn’t expected to be physical there. He won’t be expected to be too physical here either. That’s what Ching is for.

I’ve heard him compared to a DeRo type of player, if that’s the case, then I’m all in.

by Fuzion on Apr 13, 2011 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not too worried

But I’m not ready to completely dismiss it either. My thoughts about how he will pair up with Ching were along the line of thinking that Ching/Bruin/Weaver can do the dirty work while he finds space to create. His play style doesn’t need to be physical here, but he will need to be able to handle the physicality he will receive from defenders though.

Yes and no.

There are some good MLS forwards who aren’t physical by any stretch, but because they play up top WITH a physical forward they find the space they need to finish.

JJO’s post is really dripping with disdain at the move. I have to disagree that it “won’t move the attendance needle in this market.” There seems to be some kind of assumption that only a Mexican, Central or South American will do that. This is wrong. Winning will move the attendance needle, and really is the only think you want to move that needle.

And for those out there who want a Mexican for any theoretical box office advantage, I have three words for you:

I could care less about a name selling tickets

That can be a very short sighted move if the player doesn’t help bring you hardware and the team isn’t among the top tier of teams in the league. How many tickets is Henry going to sell if his chronic Achilles problem keeps him on the sidelines or forces him to shut it down completely?

Get the right player, Win hardware, and you will sell tickets.

Supposedly reporters are supposed to remain unbiased, but we all know JJO has always heavily favored the whole Mexican over anything else spin. I think part of the reason it always felt like the Dynamo were only going after Mexican stars is because that’s ALL JJO ever posted about.

Man, I gotta say...

After reading some of the truly dedicated Aris fans, them Greeks love them some good football. I know JJO doesn’t think it’s going to generate much seat-filling, but I think he underestimates what a real striker or CAM could do for the Dynamo especially going into next season in the new stadium.

Hell, can we find a really cheap young Greek CAM now? Lol. Make a pipeline to Greece, and subsequently Europe? I mean, if the fans are passionate enough to follow Koke from Greece to the Houston Dynamo (I’ve seen a few already pledge support to the Orange) that’s gotta say something for the guy’s passion.

And this from Glenn Davis makes me hope I don't wake up later to find out this was all a very late, and very evil April Fools Joke

glenndavis says:
April 14, 2011 at 12:31 am

Speaking to friends that played in Greece they are complimentary of Koke and his play and believe he will be an excellent signing.
He was a beloved player at Aris.

The guy is passionate and plays his heart out every game (reminds me of Mullan in that respect). He loved the teams he played for, and has a deep respect for the fans (reminds me of Barrett in that respect). Once the fans adopted him as their own in Aris, he captivated basically every Aris fan’s heart for multiple seasons, and even when he wasn’t scoring in droves they still held a special place for him (reminds me of Pat Onstad or Brian Ching or DeRo or any orange-bleeding Dynamo).

I hope they announce this sometime Thursday. I’m going out of town Friday and do not want to wait all weekend for the news. Oy.

So much for not generating interest or anything…

Oh, and P.S….

Thank you Martek and I’m guessing Zach for sticking up for our boy Koke and the Dynamo FO. This isn’t just a last ditch effort where the FO is settling for less. Didn’t one of the articles mention that we tried to work out a loan a while back that Aris turned down? Even if I’m mis-remembering that part I think it’s silly to just assume that Koke suddenly popped up on the radar when they couldn’t find anything else.

Exactly.

The only way that could’ve happened is if what I saw posted elsewhere actually happened, which is:

Koke worked out a deal with MLS directly, packaging himself as a DP at a specific price, and the Dynamo were just the first FO to jump on the deal. My problem with that is it’s been said in articles the Dynamo tried to get the rights to Koke directly without Aris’ support, but that Aris wasn’t going to let Koke go without obtaining something in return (a la Transfer Funds).

So that doesn’t work, meaning the Dynamo had him at least in their periphery, because they made some kind of inquiry to Aris and Koke. It makes me wonder exactly how much the Dynamo have been doing behind the scenes which JJO or anyone else with “access” has completely kept mum about.

Also...MLS Soccer's official site has no posted on the rumor.

If that’s not fuel for the fire I don’t know what is…

Don't put too too much stake in this claim, but...

http://www.malagahoy.es/article/deportes/951226/houston/tenemos/koke.html

Malaga Hoy
“Koke will play for Houston until 2013… A quick look at the Greek sports news portals was enough to gather the significance of the announcement… In Salónica, Koke was known as "El Principe"…

Traditionally, MLS has been seen as a cemetery for old elephants… Henry… Marquez… Bekham. But MLS is trying to expand, sign younger players and improve their competitiveness. MLS has a peculiar player’s ownership model: it is the league who owns the rights to a player, and the league distributes the players to all the teams. He will be the first malagueño to play for MLS…

Houston, NASA’s hometown, will be the Koke’s new home, and MLS will be the fifth league where he will play. It is an economically wealthy Texan city, with a large latino population and an interesting market. The Dynamo a rather strange nickname can now state that famous phrase of "Houston, we have Koke" to refer to the kid from Carranque."

That’s from a Spanish site. Maybe he’s just not a name Americans will recognize, but he sure has generated a buzz across the pond.

Oh, yeah and… #Koke2Houston

Indeed.

El Principe. So he comes with his own nickname out of the gate. Niiiiiice.

I nominate the elephant graveyard as the nickname for the new stadium

I’m hoping it’s called “A Stadium Orange”

My favorite concept has been...

Orange Crush Field…with of course, Crush soda sponsoring the stadium naming rights. It’d fit well, for sure.

I have always wanted it to be Dynamo Park. I’m wondering what the “front door” will be as it borders Dowling, Texas and Walker streets. Calling the stadium informally “Dowling Street” is an interesting choice because of Dick Dowling’s history. http://www.txudc.org/houstonmonument.html He was an Irish immigrant and bar owner (His bar’s name: “Bank of Bacchus”) and one of the first fire fighters in Houston. Unfortunately, he was a Confederate, but then again, defending a fort with just 50 Irish, he defeated a Union force of 6000 men and 27 ships at the Battle of Sabine Pass. Hate the cause he fought for, bit 50 against 6000 and he won? Not too shabby.

Also interestingly, Dowling Street further to the south is the “main street” of the Third Ward and one of the key thoroughfares of one of the oldest predominantly African-American areas of town. It’s also where Clyde Drexler’s mother used to have her barbecue place way back when.

Got this response on Twitter from Andy Brassell about Koke:

@andybrassell @MartinHajovsky Saw a lot of him at Malaga & Marseille. Never fulfilled potential but done well at Aris. Quick and nimble.

This is nice to see.

And my response to Andy

@andybrassell That is nice to read re Koke. Hope it happens. Nice to have a DP in #MLS that actually produces! (unlike Henry, Beckham, etc.)

Does anyone remember the actual Dynamo method for announcing acquisitions?

Don’t they wait until all the details are finalized? I seem to remember it being that way for some reason. I’m just curious why they’d wait on announcing the Koke deal, unless they are reveling in the sheer buzz the rumors have created.

This also includes a shout out to Zach for breaking the story so early based off what he was able to find, and then seeing it explode from there. It shows the power of Dynamo Theory at full tilt. Heh.

They usually are pretty tight lipped it seems

We knew nothing about Pecheco until it was over. It was rumored that Taylor was going to be signed, but the Dynamo didn’t make it official until everything was settled. I don’t really expect to hear anything before next week. I assume they will wait until he is in town, paperwork done, and have a big presser.

Did anyone else hear Ching on 1560 this afternoon

He was giving the sound bites about the new faces and how the team is improving. Then he said he knows the team is still looking to make improvements. He said something like “it looks like we might have signed a new DP….at least that’s what I’m seeing on the internet. I haven’t heard anything from the front office”

I thought it was funny that Ching sitting around looking at the internet to find out what’s going on just like us.

Not to sound cocky but at least three players follow the DT Twitter so if they haven’t heard anything official, they likely have seen all the stuff I’ve been throwing out there…or at least I can dream of such lofty influence, lol.
