Other trialist

Any news on who the second trialist may be?

by DD77DD on Jul 15, 2011 9:39 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah I'm curious...

Though it sounds great to me: we have a couple of promising players on trial who could potentially help (forward and midfielder, respectively) and hopefully he’s a European who’s youngish and has some good experience. Hope we hear news in the next couple of days, I’m sure someone around Houston will get the scoop

Perhaps there are those wondering why certain trialists are referred to as "unnamed" such and such...

Well, it’s because each MLS team is only given a limited number of claims rights. What I mean is that I believe each team is only allowed to place their claim on 5 or 6 players each season without having to sign them. What this means is that when the Dynamo trial 2 or 3 guys at a time, they don’t necessarily want to place their claim on any of them until they can scout them in practices. Why do that?

If another team catches wind of a trialist and perhaps has an interest, unless a claim is placed on the player, the second team may then subsequently place a claim to said player. It is very possible this is actually what has happened with the Cruz2.0 to FCD issue, though granted FCD had claims to him previously.

But yeah, that’s why they don’t name names all the time. The lesser trialists, it’s not such a big deal, but when they begin going after decent international talent (perhaps the European?), then they need to remain mum so no other team swoops in and takes advantage.

Sounds about right

I figured that other than winding up the fans there was likely a legit reason for keeping a name under wraps, and considering its a European player that it probably isn’t a 3rd-division scrub (and likely would draw unwanted attention from other teams). Fair enough, hopefully we’ll hear more on this later as DK and the crew get a chance to evaluate him and see if it’ll work out to either extend the trial or sign. Thanks Fuze

Hmmmm

Portland needs defensive help, especially a CB and we got a log jam there. The Wiz of Boz seems to live on the bench as does Freeman. Boz weighs in heavily @ 210k. The longer these players sit, the more they lose value. Freeman is 150-161k (Ginge, which value counts against the cap- base or guaranteed salary?).

Coop is @ 250-267.5k. Not good value for the salary, but he would definitely upgrade our front line, and can shoot from distance.

What’s interesting is Martek’s long fuelled rationalization about why we gifted (my choice of words, some day Julius James will be a trivia answer) De Ro to Toronto was to make salary cap room for Boz, the lynchpin for our central defense. That was in 2009. Dunno if that was the FO’s thinking, but if it was, that plan hasn’t been too successful. Both Boz and Freeman have “long term” contracts with options as does Coop, so I’m assuming they run 3-4 yrs.

What do you think of a straight up trade Boz for Coop? If this is a rebuilding yr, would love to throw Freeman into the mix for picks, surely to be low rd if Portland continues to plummet in the standings. I’m ambivalent about the former, though I think it would strengthen the squad, but thumbs up on the latter (both Dfers for Coop plus 1st rd pick, if possible).

Thoughts???

I doubt Portland takes a clearly hindered Boswell, but one can hope...

I know they’d take a chance on Freeman. I’ve been thinking about potential trades for a while for the Dynamo, and it’s hard to rationalize most of the trades due to one reason or another. The Dynamo need to give up something viewed as quality to get quality in return. If we look to trade within the MLS this holds the most value because it is only within MLS we can truly “trade” players, which is to say trading of players is a very American process.

In your scenario, if I am Portland I am also Spencer and I know of Boswell’s value as an anchor on the backline. Any improvement for my team there is a huge improvement, and a step in the right direction. Giving up Coop isn’t something I am willing to do, however, and is too far outside my realm of possibility for this particular trade. Certainly, Portland wants defense, but not at the expense of one of their beloved (and Coop is beloved there right now). It is the equivalent of the Dynamo trading away Ching for defensive players.

This leads me to my next question. Which is more prolific as a possibility, trading within MLS or transfers during the transfer windows? It’s a tough call, and the real problem is many teams are in love with their top players, and those that aren’t really are more about cap conservation to snag a DP or two in the transfer window.

And yes...

I stand by my thought about Cooper being beloved in Portland. The trade rumors were speculated based off a few words said by a player or “inside source” (just ask Battle Red Blog readers about “inside sources”) which was taken out of context and then turned into a story which is now all about Cooper potentially leaving Portland. It’s all just speculation.

But then again, you never know. If I am the Dynamo FO, I am offering the deal to be sure, starting only with offering Boswell straight up. I still personally think Freeman has some value left and shouldn’t just be “thrown in” for the heck of it. If anything, we should offer them Ashe instead of Freeman and get his high salary off our books (unless FIFA 11’s salaries are off-base?). I think Cooper and Ching would team up well up top, and Cooper is capable of holding up the ball when necessary should he be paired with a Bruin up top. So yeah, as Dynamo FO I offer. But as Portland, feasibly, unless I absolutely feel the need to get Boswell or get rid of Cooper, I’m not biting without more incentive (and not Freeman).

Overshooting

Getting Coop and a 1st is probably a stretch but I’d take that in a heartbeat. Both defenders salaries are too great to keep on the bench.

Wow

Damn, Tony Tchani was available? Would have loved to get him, move Cameron back to CB, trade Boz, Freeman, and possibly another CB. Getting the ball out of the back, with a quick transition to attack would help immensely.

While Cameron can be a good DM, he’s a phenom CB.

Sigh, too late. Back to static offense. Sometimes we mirror the USMNT, which at times seems to run a perpetual 1/2 court basketball offense- the old pick and roll deep in the paint. Against Toronto, Martek rolled his eyes, lamenting we resemble the Celts in the fading Bird-McHale-Parrish ‘twilight’ yrs.

New Trialist: German attacking midfielder Bjorn Lindemann

As best I can tell, he’s a 2nd division journeyman

Thanks for the link

There were a lot of set pieces in that video; I would like to see more video of him on the run of play, but beggars can’t be choosers.

on Fifa he’s a CAM

From Nicolai's link (good find sir)

RE: Lindemann

“Lindemann has been with VfL Osnabrück — who were relegated from the German second division this past season while being coached by American former pro Joe Enochs — since 2009, mostly playing as a central midfielder with a knack for going forward. The 27-year-old (pictured above left) tallied five goals and three assists in all competitions for Osnabrück last season and is open to continuing his career in the US.

"I think I have a good head for passing and a good shot, and I have good conditioning," Lindemann said. "It’s a new situation here, coming in the middle of the season. I just hope I can bring some technique and passing to help the club."

Barrett remarked on some of the positives he saw in the newcomers.

"We were playing a possession game and while we weren’t doing a whole lot, it was hot and we saw them putting in the effort to get on the ball and fight through the heat," Barrett said. "With the travel, that’s a positive sign.""

I see two things, he played CAM basically and is comfortable passing and moving with the ball, and both players pushed through the heat — indicating to me they actually push themselves instead of being fat flops.

Alvaro Sanchez

I just saw a You Tube video of him and wow this guy can play! If the Dynamo let this guy go then…i don’t know what the hell is wrong with them. As for the German he wouldn’t be a bad addition as well, but can he take the Houston heat?

by RedAce on Jul 15, 2011 7:55 PM CDT reply actions

It takes two to Tango

I have no idea if Sanchez is a fit, but just remember we can’t sign a guy who isn’t interested in playing here.

I wasn't aware of this

“Lindemann after mid-April 2011 and later appeared intoxicated during training, he was, like his teammate Kevin Schöneberg , VfL summarily dismissed.”

that’s a google translation of his german wikipedia page

by DD77DD on Jul 17, 2011 3:29 PM CDT reply actions

On second thought...

You know I DON’T want a drunky playing for the Dynamo. That would look terrible in the locker room! Screw this German

by RedAce on Jul 17, 2011 5:51 PM CDT up reply actions

That can't be right

Germans wouldn’t fire somebody for drinking a beer.

Word

Um, when a German team says there’s a problem because you’re too drunk, then there’s a problem.

Hopefully though its not an issue or that he takes a cue from the Ron Burgundy “it’s so damn hot…. was a bad choice” playbook

I went and read the article about him being cut from the team as opposed to the wiki

Still a rough translation, but it seemed pretty straight forward on why he was suspended. So it wasn’t one of those things that just happened to make it on to wikipedia. Still don’t know the details so it’s tough to say how big of an issue it was.
