Wednesday Orange Slices: Cruz 2.0 (Trial Version)

The Dynamo announced today they have brought in Colombian midfielder Daniel Cruz on trial...not to be confused with American Danny Cruz. Cruz 2.0 joins training starting Thursday. [Houston Dynamo]

30-year-old Cruz is a native of Cali, Colombia, who has played in the Benelux countries since he was a teenager. He joined Dutch power Ajax at the age of 17 and made several appearances for the first team in the 2000-01 Eredivisie season. Cruz has spent the majority of his career in Belgium, moving to Germinal Beerschot on loan in 2002 and permanently in 2003. He has since set a Belgian league record for appearances by a foreign-born player, surpassing the 250-game mark, and become a naturalized Belgian citizen.

Did you read in that piece from the Dynamo this wonderful piece of news at the end:

Sunday’s reserve squad could also include Ecuadorian forward Miler Castillo, who has trained on the side this week while recovering from injury,

Injured while on trial? Doing what? One more guy who came here out of shape, it sounds like to me. Though it’s very possible I am wrong.

What's Dutch-Colombian speke for Koke?

Playtherapy just sent me this little message about Cruz. Oh wel. At least they won;t have to make up new press releases here. Just take the ones from earlier this year and sub out the names, Cruz for Koke and Germinal Beeschot for Aris.

Nice Wiki write up that reads a bit like Koke:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Cruz

KFC Germinal Beerschot
Since his move from Ajax in 2002, Daniel Cruz has established himself as one of most prolific players in Germinal Beerschot club history. His time there spans nearly a decade – having made over 175 appearances for the club in all competitions. Cruz is a considered a trendsetter in the Belgian Pro League. The South American midfielder is known as a play-maker with charisma and modesty.4
In 2005, Cruz captained Germinal Beerschot to a Belgian Cup title.5

Lierse SK
After winning the Belgian Cup in 2005, Cruz shocked fans and the media when he announced that he had signed a contract with rival club Lierse S.K. for the following season. The deal was rumored to be one of the largest contracts in Belgian Pro League history.6 Financial troubles at Lierse halfway through the 2005-06 season led to the club actually selling Cruz back to Germinal Beerschot after only six months of his three-year deal.7

Personal
Cruz is the son of retired Argentinian football player José Luis Cruz who played for Club Atlético River Plate and América de Cali.8 In January 2009, Voetbal Magazine produced a cover story featuring an extensive interview with Daniel Cruz. The article highlighted the Colombian’s role at his club, his recent injuries, and his love for Germinal Beerschot.

Because those Walloons are so much better!

Yup, obviously a guy who has scored 12 goals in 193 games according to Wiki is going to carry us all the way to Title Land. Now the Bear can Dance once more and no longer need to waddle the Trail of Tears.

Humpf!

Perhaps trendsetter Cruz will bring this unheard of concept of passing in some sort of manner resembling forward motion. Then the spaces will open and our offense will no longer pantomime charades of what continental drift looks like. Cement cleats will come off.

Viva Revolution!

I know we can’t get a great striker and a great midfielder, so i’m fine with cruz as long as we get a game-changing striker

by DD77DD on Jul 6, 2011 3:38 PM CDT reply actions

Sigh

Just getting jaded as the rumors start and some true impact players are mentioned and we get Castillo and Cruz.

For weeks, the FO and Dom say:
We’re looking
We’re on it
Things are going to change
We know we need help
These promising players could help us at these positions
We scouted these players at the Gold Cup and are making approaches to some of these (of course, none of whom are mentioned now)

I mean, I can only keep my Dynamo signing impact player(s) erection so long.

Drooping, big time.

watched some you tube videos, he seems to be a left sided attacking mid. he drifts into the space Davis occupies in many of the clips, moving from the middle to the left flank. however, he does seem to hold the ball well and makes positive passes. We desperately need POSITIVE passing, rather than giving up on an attack and simply passing the ball like its a hot potato all the way back to Tally Hall who then boots the hot potato to the other team.

One major difference here between Cruz and Koke is that Koke did not come out on a trial. this guy is willing to trial with us when he would be entitled to scoff at the notion of trying out for a team in a lesser league than the one he just spent 8 years in.

Thanks for the info

Good heads up. Some of us have just been waiting sooooo long that we were hoping for a little more (not a knock so much on Cruz, who I hope is the next breakout)…

by playtherapy on Jul 6, 2011 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions

dude, i definitely feel that but we have to be realistic. I wish we could get Dos Santos, but it is impossible to expect that we will get young talent that is already in europe. We have to expect a player that is either 30+ years old with a name people recognize and European experience. Or a player under 25 coming from Latin America with little name recognition.

Cruz, instead is a Latin American player with a decade of experience in Belgium. He certainly has skill but I’m sure we could do better. However, a player coming from Europe with little name recognition (a la Eric Hassli) would certainly be cheaper then a player like Torston Frings or Marquez, etc. and could pan out to be a break out player.

I prefer they find a talented player from the Brazilian or Argentine League, they could provide what we need, creative attacking midfielders and quick strikers that can FINISH!

The most important thing for me is that the player come IN SHAPE and FIT TO PLAY.

by nicolai on Jul 6, 2011 5:33 PM CDT reply actions

But...

Dreaming of Dos Santos wasn’t reality based but potentially signing Zelaya and others was. The last we heard, we were seriously looking at signing Gold Cup stand outs.

Then….

Nada….

Then….

Castillo…

After teasing us with better known names, we get a 23 yr old speedster from Mexico’s Div 2, and Cruz 2.0. These may be excellent players, yet as long time followers, we’ve seen a revolving door for most of our foreign newbies. And that’s when we actually sign a few. And those- except for Taylor- are fill-ins as starters, not players to help us become contenders or to build around.

What happened to possibly signing Gold Cup players?

by playtherapy on Jul 7, 2011 8:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Starting to wonder...

what the deal is when it comes to our scouting/signing of aforementioned talent. I know we’re not a marquee club like LA or NY but still, we can’t be that bad, can we? It seems like we’re going after legit talent we get the “I’d love to come by I have a dental appointment” and then we end up with B or C-list talent that may or may not pan out. I mean sure, Castillo might be a revelation and so may Cruz2, but there’s not alot to go by. I guess we will never know what goes on behind the curtain, but surely we can do better than this, right? Maybe I’m being impatient and that Canelli has a long-term plan that clearly we’re not privy to, but I just don’t know

It's the lack of info that's so frustrating.

Here’s Glenn Davis’s explany, which does not really tell us much new in teh way of details, just philosophy(?):

“On the MLS level daily we here tons of transfer talk and rumor. Some had told me for sure that Rodolfo Zelaya was coming to Houston, I heard the same about Carlos Costly and as we all know this were and still may be players the Dynamo are pursuing. The notion of finding a player of quality that lifts the current Dynamo squad and fits a particular demographic just might make sense at this time. The club has the current challenge of gaining momentum heading into an amazing new stadium in downtown that is set to open May 2012. The speculation is good for the sport but the process can be frustrating for fans and those making deals I am sure.

In Seattle with the club making money and having forty two consecutive sell-outs the Sounders can re-invest in their team and are looking to continue to upgrade it.
One might realize the same in Toronto who is bringing in German Torsten Frings who is older and comes with question of adaptation to MLS and it’s challenges.

In Houston fans are wondering how committed financially AEG/Brener Group is to bringing in higher quality players Dynamo CEO Chris Canetti has made it clear that two signings are looking to be made in this summer transfer window period. Fact is there is pressure all around. Pressure to improve a team, pressure to satisfy fans and sponsors with an on field product. The search to find new players is first and foremost about improving the on field team but the combination of someone who can spike the gate is weighed upon heavily these days.

by playtherapy on Jul 7, 2011 9:51 AM CDT up reply actions

Just read that...

And yeah, it about sums things up. I mean we keep hearing talk but the results are not exactly overwhelming. I honestly don’t think we’re asking for anything outrageous like “oh, lets try and snag Fabregras from Arsenal” or “we need to sign Sjneider!”, we simply want someone with a solid pedigree that can make a consistent, significant improvement to the team. Yes, it will cost but if we’re trying to go the thrifty route its going to be incredibly hit-or-miss because you will likely get exactly what you pay for. Guh.

I agree

the south american leagues are oozing with creativity, although sometimes lacking in execution. That would be a great area to mine out some young coach-able talent. Are we just not getting enough money to go and scout these types of players?

by DynaNole on Jul 7, 2011 12:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah...another Landin...another Koke.

Except they probably will pay Cruz 2.0 just like they paid Koke, so if he fails at being anything worth our while, they can dump him without too much salary hit. Either way, a midfielder who is a true CAM would be kinda nice. Especially if he can actually hold AND pass the ball. Two things this team lacks outside of Brian Ching and Brad Davis.

Riordan signs with a chinese league team. I gues modern football is all about the money, which we need to shell out

by nicolai on Jul 7, 2011 10:32 AM CDT reply actions

riordan

i did not think he would be a good fit as he is rumored to be totally self centered and a black hole in the dressing room. however he is quality (3rd all time leading scorer in scottish league).

by nicolai on Jul 7, 2011 10:43 AM CDT reply actions

Yup

Don’t get me wrong, Riordan is definitely talented as his resume and stats show but yes, after reading through quite a few articles/papers (of course, how many of those are biased we can’t quite know) but the impression I get is that he gets results but is a locker room headache. And would we need that right now? I mean, if we had someone who could consistently provide Bruin & Ching with chances our forwards would be doing nice (although we still need a speedy forward not named Oduro).

by Michael_D on Jul 7, 2011 10:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Perhaps out of the box thinking needed

Interesting how well Oduro has done when NOT asked to hit the goal.

by playtherapy on Jul 7, 2011 11:42 AM CDT up reply actions

agreed

i agree, my point though is that if somebody we are interested in ends up signing with the chinese league, what does that tell us about our credibility with bonafide talent? in this case, im sure he realized he was going to a much worse league than mls, however i bet his pay check is huge and nearly tax free

I want to mention that we have an international that turned out well…… Hainault!

by nicolai on Jul 7, 2011 11:01 AM CDT reply actions

Very happy we did not get Riordin. He would have been a cancer in that clubhouse. As for the others, well, nothing continues to happen, doesn’t it?

Scouting

I was starting to wonder if we even have a scouting system in place after all of these bad signings. having listened to Dominic Kinnear on Glenn Davis’ radio show this past week im now certain that we dont.

Kinnear said on there that the avenues they are using to find players is through contacts that Ralston and Barret have in Latin America and some that Kinnear himself has over in Europe.

-These are the same contacts, from what i understand sort of a scouting agency we contract overthere, that recommended Koke to us. I remember around the time we signed Koke, Kinnear was on the radio show talking about how a deal fell through with a target that had been identified by these “contacts” and that they subsequently recommended Koke. -

Furthermore, Kinnear admitted on the radio show, not for the first time, that they had depended on Youtube videos of players rather then actually going to see them play in person. And when they are seen in person it is always kinnear who goes to see them.

We need scouts, it makes sense for kinnear to watch them play but he cant do that during the season. And since his trips through the Caribbean and Latin America did not yield much we are in this position once again where we will most likely depend on youtube videos, or on players that are willing to trial (which most of the type of players that we fans want would not be willing to do). Imagine asking Torsten Frings to trial with us rather tahn straight up signing him depending of course upon passing a physical as is standard procedure (a man with over 70 caps for germany who was part of the 2nd place team from 2002 WC).

I nominate myself as head scout, haha

by nicolai on Jul 7, 2011 12:42 PM CDT reply actions

That's just MLS in general

Teams don’t have the money for an army of scouts the way an NFL or EPL team might. Doesn’t mean we can’t, or shouldn’t, do a better job, but relying on contacts and video is something that I guess happens a lot for most MLS teams.

what a shame

we dont need an army, only like 2 or 3 scouts. but i believe you are correct papa, such s the league standard. i just cant believe kinnear could not find anyone in Brazil that would work out.

Eddie Johnson is talking about coming back. I think we are next in line for allocation, the way new england got benny feilhaber. What do you guys think on EJ?
