It Was Supposed To Be So Easy
(ah, the Streets)
Right, so this is both a stark reminder and an encouragement: we, whether consciously or otherwise, have opted for the path of most resistance. I read earlier on MLS.com that we effectively have of all MLS teams the toughest stretch of games left in the season when you adjust for quality of teams, home v away, etc. So if we still make the playoffs – and at this point, we control that – we’re gonna have to do it the ol’ fashioned way.
On the bright side, I’m very happy to see Carr’s movement both in the dying minutes of the RSL game and the fact that he turned around and played (I believe) the full 90 for the reserves match the next day. He’s hungry and ready to reward the patience and faith the team has had in him and he’s shown in those chances that he still has that pace that can trouble defenses. If we can mix him in with Costly, Ching and Weaver we’ve got a pretty darned good strike force. Also, Camargo is here!! Downside: he’s not match fit. I don’t want to read that as a return of Koke because while it may appear that way at first, I think under further scrutiny the comparisons fall apart. He has the technique and touch but because of the delays in getting him here he hasn’t played in a while plus, well, its hot. I know it gets hot in Brazil too but its also winter there right now (its like 60F in Curitiba) so its fairly brisk weather down there and then you fly north to Hades, Texas. But it looks like they want to get him going and he wants to as well, so playing him in reserve matches and then the Monterrey match will help bring that along and hopefully in a couple of weeks we can see him as a sub if all works out.
I realize these are all make-or-break games but this one stands out because its the beginning of a 3-away-game stretch and we have every chance to get the full 3 points and start it off right and keep the momentum going.
Please MLS...
…you’ve tried this before-pandering the the non-soccer caring American public. First it was the backwards clock and the shoot out. Then you got all that mess out of the way and got to some real stone cold footy; the kind loved all over the world. Please don’t change the points rules just to push teams to score more goals. We all know that sometimes the most exciting matches are nil nil draws (despite what the naysayers may think).
Forgot about that
I just noticed that link at the bottom and I didn’t bother..sounds like a horrible, horrible idea to me. A draw is a part of the game, and that shouldn’t change for the US. Guh
one solution...
…to lessen the amount of ties, seems glaringly obvious to me, don’t create a league based on parity. it shouldn’t be all that suprising when teams tend to end level, especially during expansion years where some teams get gutted. let the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

There should be relegation in the US of some sort
That makes all those meaningless draws 100% more meaningful without messing with points at all. Right now, there is no real reason to not tank a season if you know say halfway through you won’t finish in the playoffs hunt. At least with relegation, every game matters, every team matters, etc. And then you also promote the entire US Soccer system by giving a shot at those lesser teams who’ve built themselves appropriately and deserve a shot at the big “time”, well, more like the semi-“big time”.

Hmmm
We’d have to get away from the All Holy American sports model- an idea enmeshed in franchise purchases, and TV and stadium contracts.
Though I’m all for it, Jaime Trecker wrote an interesting article on how he thinks it’s ruining the Premier League:
http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/premierleague/story/barclays-season-preview-2011-12-promotion-relegation-going-away-080211
Although, you could spin it the other way and look @ how the Englsih superpowers are ruining the Premiership. Gads, one wouldn’t want the EPL to look like the annual Hoops-Rangers wrestlemania for their title and Champion’s League money.
I recall
reading an article in the Guardian lamenting as much, that relegation wouldn’t be so pronounced except that with the way the EPL has misshapen FA as a whole (and of course the Champions League only exacerbates it). I’ll have to dig it up but it was a pretty interesting read on how relegation has been shaped over the past decade or so and that it really becomes debilitating to overall league play and the teams that typically hover near the bottom of the EPL table or top of the Championship.
I would want to see us implement some form of relegation in MLS, particularly now that it seems the NASL has their act together and if they can stay a unified second league for the next few years perhaps think about using them as the relegation league for MLS (it is, after all, the second-tier league in the USSF model). The only “American twist” I would add to relegation is perhaps let them keep a top draft pick, thereby allowing the worst teams to build for the future on the cheap or to use those picks to make trade deals. They’ll still be relegated but it gives them a chance to reload, play in a competitive league and fight for promotion to MLS the following season.
relegation has it's pluses and minuses
Sure teams at the bottom of the table have something to play for, but that’s usually just a handful of teams. Then you have 2-3 teams battling for the league titles with the a few more maybe trying to lock up a spot in champions league. For the most part all of the mid-table teams are just playing out the string perfectly happy just to be out of the relegation zone.
Personally I wish the league placed as much emphasis on the supporters shield. Get a sponsor, attach a cash bonus to it for the players. The playoffs aren’t going anywhere though, and that’s a good thing. They create excitement the same way that the knockout rounds in champion league or any other tournament do. They also create a lot of revenue. The best team might not always win, but the chance for an underdog to knock off a heavy favorite is part of the draw.

Costly remark
MLS kick off reads:
Staying in Central America, just a couple of days after confirming on FutbolMLS.com’s Tiro Libre that he wanted to stay in MLS, Houston Dynamo forward Carlo Costly told fans that he would love to wear the jersey of Mexican giants Club América. (SPANISH)
http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2011/08/25/kick-expansion-timbers-good-mighty-red-bulls
(My work blocks Unvision feed link so i can’t post it).
While Costly shows the suspicion of promise, it’s just that so far. Perhaps he’s reading the tea leaves or maybe he just likes Mexican Liga salaries?
Same time man
same time.
Just reminds me of a street hustle where you don’t know if the guy is gonna take your cash and run or actually give you the goods once you pay.
Costly shows promise and I think perhaps wants to hear more public statements from the Dynamo (or local press) that he may work out long-term before he wants to commit more effort. Likewise, it seems we don’t want to say anything until we see more results from him. Same time, man, same time. And of course he’d like the Mexican league salary but I think those teams as well would want to see his play in MLS before making any moves for him. Though if he starts turning effort into results I think we can start talking about money and longer-term contracts. This is of course conjecture on my part, but just an impression I get.
His play on the pitch has been steadily improving and he was a real threat the last game…it seemed he petered out near the end (or decided not to push the point?) before he was subbed out. I do hope he can finally break through this weekend against Vancouver because I think it would help his level of comfort with us and vice versa. Plus, it adds another dimension to our attack; everyone wins.
Some thoughts
Scoreless ties: Part of the game. Change nothing. This is a moronic idea.
Costly: Looks nice, but he’s a forward. Score and we’ll talk about you staying. Don’t and good luck getting that Club America deal.
Promotion/relegation: In the US, this is more accurately written as In business/out of business. If anyone can come up with a plan for a US team to be relegated and it not be a death sentence, a guaranteed non-death sentence, then I’m for it. Other than that, forget it. It will never happen and it’s time to move on from this.
Parody-based league: Best and most money-making model for the entire league I can think of. Having 2-4 dominant teams and the rest with nothing to play for at all is great for that 2-4 and sucks completely for everyone else. The best-supported league int eh world is the Bundesliga and a wide-open competition and a structure that produces that is one of the major reasons why.
Playoffs: I’d prefer both a championship for the season and a concomitant tournament championship, rather than playing the season in order to qualify for the tournament, which is what we have now. That would give us three major trophies to play for every year, MLS Championship, US Championship Cup and CONCACAF Champions League (CONCAchampions). Now what’s wrong with that?

allocation
Anyone heard of anything about this new guy in the allocation. Ochoa. plays forward, only 25. seems like the kind of player the FO would be interested in. i have no idea if he is even remotely alright skill/ speed wise though.

Ochoa
Except for youth US Nat teams and a few games in Mexico, he hasn’t really done that much.
I think we need impact players, not more bench pine maybees.
Read somewhere Seattle looked @ him on trial in the offseason. If so, why’s didmn’t they sign him (especially after giving their target fwd the axe before opening day).
Sibling
That was ochoa’s Older brother i believe. i think i read that on the wvhooligan.com blog.
