Geoff Cameron's Position Poll: Even the answer brings so many other questions
We've argued over this all season. It's time to commit to something, compile the results, and see where it takes us. There are so many offspins to this decision as Cameron seems to be an automatic starter and the only real vacant decision is attacking mid, a position that seems invisible even when Cameron (or anyone else for that matter) take on the mantle.
It's time for the uneducated and unrealistic to take our torches and pitch forks and ...
and...
ummm....
vote???
(Was hoping for some kind of "V is for Vendatta" umpf, but ran outa gas. Must be a lack of midfield service to blame for my verbal impotence)

You people are going to kill me but...
I’d like to see a Moffat-Watson pairing in the middle. Let’s face it, Watson’s best moments have been in the middle of the pitch not against the touch line. Let him get out there and have the freedom to rove around now that we/he know(s) Moffat can handle the defensive work. Let Geoff ride one on the bench and let’s see if this combination can work because we all know that Cameron-Moffat is a little lack-luster. If it’s such a hard decision where to put Cameron on the field, then let’s just leave him on the bench.
Not big Watson fan
As he seems to flatter to deceive, not much tangible production for me. I know where I want Cameron and I want him starting there. While I don’t agree, your suggestion is out of the box thinking that might lead to better results as we can’t seem to buy an away win with “in the box thinking”. If we are to make and then win in the playoffs, something needs to change.
Camargo or bust
Other than that, I’d quite honestly rather have Dixon before Watson at AM/CAM. At least his production would probably match (which may not be much, but still) and we’d get the added bonus that he would at least track back and play on defense.
Not sure Dixon can handle 90 minutes yet. He’s still slight of build and young. But hey, it has to happen sometime.

He can't
Of course I’d love to give Dixon a run-out but I do agree that’s he’s not ready to start or handle a full 90. I’d love to see his sub minutes go up and start preparing him for a starting role perhaps mid-to-late next season. I just get irked at Watson’s play: we know the creativity exists and we do see flashes of it, but it’s fleeting and when he does lose the ball he rarely gives chase or helps defend. It’s leaving the DM high and dry and it distorts the midfield because you effectively have 1.5 midfielders in the middle. With time and more work, I think Dixon could fit that role or perhaps on the right or left
I don't like Watson
Sometimes I feel like he doesn’t care when he plays and he doesn’t try hard enough. He was the reason we got scored on against Vancouver since he wasn’t watching his man (he rarely keeps up with his man anyways). I want to see the Camargo – Moffat combo! I will be very disappointed if Moffat was benched because he is such a great player. IF Camargo works out then we can offload Watson (FINALLY). Nobody can change my mind about Watson…nobody.
(I’m in Art History and not paying attention at all lol. Professor is talking about Sumerians or something like that….)
Making due...
look, I’m not Watson aficionado but I understand why we have him, just like why we keep playing Cameron at CAM: we don’t have many other options. I’ll admit, in the center of the field he does have some creativity but what he produces plus his lack of defensive commitment makes him a huge liability. He may make the occasional good play or pass, but if its going the other way he’ll stop pursuing after about 10 yards and I don’t think anyone will mistake him for a good challenger.
And if Camargo works out we’d be insane not to pair him with Moffat; to me it’d be the perfect match-up because they can overlap at times (either Moffat can push and Camargo could hold, or vice versa) but apparently Camargo is a great possessor and passer (and no slouch defensively). I really, really hope he can work out because I think we could see a significant improvement in the middle and consequently in our attack.
/Ah, Art History…
I can't disagree with you
on the effort issue. I’ve seen it a couple of times myself. In reality, if Camargo-Moffat works out we can honestly release Watson without hurting our depth.
Exactly
as I said to Martek, I honestly think Dixon could take his sub minutes, if we let go of Watson. I know he’s young and still has to strengthen up to make it in the middle but he makes up for it with creativity and matches it with effort on both ends.
Its what I love
about this place. But of course to me the time for experimenting with Cameron at different positions is over. Put him back at CB and let him solidify the defense…if we want to play around next season with a fully stocked, quality roster then sure, why not. But let’s sort out the D first.
That’s the best reason yet to put Geoff at centerback. It solidifies a leaky, leaky defense.

Gribbs
pointed that we don’t actually concede as many goals as it would seem, but I think that’s a bit deceptive because while we may not be a statistically poor defense, the problem is we’re shaky. I’m trying to find some type of stats to rate our defense but haven’t found any yet. But I think the broader point is that while we don’t have an obviously poor defense, its our shakiness that gives us that perception: its more the fact that we don’t trust our defense to hold a lead or get a clean sheet. And its typically one or two mistakes a game that sometimes translates to that back-breaking game winner or equalizer. And I hate to go back to it but it honestly starts with our CBs: considering we have average defending on the wings (particularly at RB) it forces at least one of the CB to move either up the pitch or to the sides to help. And that would be fine but Boz doesn’t have very good recovery speed and so it leaves Hainault stranded in front of the box. Cameron has that speed and awareness to both stop an attack, to be positionally aware of other players and to start a counter. It’s those 3 things that get magnified as the minutes and games go by and will be a highlight/lowlight of the playoffs, should we make it. Mark it down: we’ll shock some team by going up early, then concede a goal sometime mid-game only to allow a late-minute game-winner. Just sayin’
And to further complicate the picture...
…but in a good way, Will Bruin and Danny Cruz are both back in training this week.

Good problems
I’d love to have them back in about 3-4 games…I love the problems Cruz’ pace causes, if only he can learn to harness it (which I know will come with time). As for El Oso, it’d be really nice to have him back as well to give Ching a break and as perhaps an alternative to or match with Weaver
Given that Costly has yet to score, and was ineffective (a charitable term) against Vancouver, does Bruin start ahead of him?

Curious
has Cameron ever had a go at RB? I know its one of the options up there but I’m just curious to know if he did and how he fared. If it weren’t for the shakiness at CB I’d almost be open to trying that…he’s quick enough to run the right flank, his D is unquestionable and his time in the middle would be of use there. Don’t know how his service would be but that could be better left to Cruz or Clark. But that’s certainly an interesting thought
