Kinnear gets three-year extension

Thrice as nice. Houston Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear will be in orange through 2015.

Instead of his deal ending in 2012, Houston Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear will be in Orange at least until 2015, as he got a three-year extension to his contract with the team.

Jose de Jesus Ortiz announced te Kinnear's New Year's gift in his piece in the Chron today. Link here. Here are a couple of highlights of the article:

With one season left on the contract, club owners AEG, Golden Boy Promotions and Gabriel Brener tore up the old deal and gave the fiery Scot a raise for 2012 in the new four-year pact.

Ortiz says the team will hold a presser early in the week to announce the deal, and quote team prez Chris Canetti thusly:

"I'm not in a position to talk about Dom's situation right now," Dynamo president Chris Canetti said. "But it's safe to say he's going to be the team's head coach for the foreseeable future."

Personally, I think there are nothing but positives about this deal. Kinnear has had his ups and downs, like any coach, but I think you'd have to be harsh indeed to argue that the team is not better off for keeping Kinnear with this deal. Three MLS Cup finals in six years? Five trophies overall in Houston, adding to a Supporter's Shield in San Jose the year before the team came here? Those are the credentials of a coach you do what it takes to keep.

In Kinnear We Trust.

I don’t see how anyone can see anything negative in the deal. It’s hard to find good coaches in this league and this just assured us a very good coach through 2015.

Ok...

So this begs the question…

When do we lock up Canetti for the rest of Eternity? What he has managed to do coupled with Dom is awesome. Carmago? Brilliant. And to do so as the red-headed Haniault look-alike step child of the Gala-queefs is well, nothing short of miraculous. He brings ‘em in, and Dom gets the most out of ’em. It’s a great pairing.

Kinda like Carmago and Moffat. See what I did there?

I should hope so

I don’t know how Canetti is signed but we need him to remain Dom’s right-hand man…he’s had his hand in the pies of this past season with signings, the stadium and helping to negotiate naming rights so it only makes sense to keep him on to start this Epoca Naranja

Dynamo Midfield

Carmago and Moffat need to bring more offense to the dynamo. Basically, we are playing with two defensive mids. I think thats why Davis slides inside so much. Ashes overlaps gives us a five man field with Cam covering the defense.

Yep

Don’t get me wrong, Camargo playing the CM/CAM role was a huge upgrade for us this season but he is technically a DM and those tendencies showed as he seemingly needed reminders that he needed to be at the forward of setting up attacks, and would sometimes start them deep. We need a natural CAM who is comfortable there and I think we’d have a dangerous midfield with a DP-level CAM + Camargo at the DM and of course Davis at the LM. The question, of course, is who takes up the spot on the right? My hope is that by the end of the season its Dixon

I agree

But that begs the question – who starts and who is on the bench? Camargo or Moffat?

Also I love how you sneak Dixon into nearly every post. It’s a good thing. I hope he continues to develop and can become a reliable substitute if not this season by the next.

So our checklist of what kind of player we need so far is: A forward (preferably one with some pace), a comfortable CAM, and a RM. I am okay with that because as it stands we easily have one of the best defenses out there and a great keeper. If Weaver is healthy, watching the Bruin/Weaver tandem will be great to see again (of course Carr can state his case to start…assuming no Ching). Our midfield, which is not without its holes, is still pretty strong.

I think this season will be very exciting for a number of reasons. How great would it be if we get to the MLS cup final and the stadium awarded is our own. /fingerscrossed+knocksonwood

Little ol' me?

I’m just saying, Dixon is fast, has good technique and seems to have a good head on his shoulders…things we’d want in an RM. I realize he still has work to do but considering his potential you can’t help but be excited about the possibilities.

As far as bench, I had this discussion previously with Martek & playtherapy and to me – my opinion – Moffat goes to the bench assuming we got this quality, natural CAM. Camargo gives you everything Moffat does and then some, just minus the bionic leg that is capable of 100+ mph shots.

Like you, I’m not terrified if we don’t get this done because again, this is pretty much the same team that went to the mat with LAG for the Cup and were a LM short of winning it. So we still have a very good team, its just we know with an addition here and there we can be a terrifying AND deep team.

I’m with you Gribbsy, these are exciting times we live in for the boys in Orange…let’s see how it all plays out!

I'm going to be honest with you guys...

I would not get your hopes up for a DP-level CAM or even a non-DP-level CAM. IF the Dynamo had any aspirations to sign a true CAM, they wouldn’t bring in Sturgis, even on the cheap. They’d already have DM covered twice over between only Moffat and Carmago, and both being entirely capable of carrying the position on their own. Even with extracurricular activities, you only need two DMs if you plan to play a single DM in your set, as the roster spot for a third DM would be a more comfortable spot for a mediocre CAM.

Why do I bring this up? Consider for a moment, if the Dynamo WERE planning to try and sneak in a DP-level CAM, why would they bring in Sturgis or for that matter re-sign Carmago and continue to hold onto Moffat? I’ll explore this more in depth in a post coming within the next couple of days, but I think if we truly examine the moves of the Dynamo this offseason thus far, they are gearing up for yet another season without a true DP-level player.

The Dynamo…the next Houston Rockets?

Hope

its all about hope…look, the cynical side tells me its not going to happen, or if it does it will be something that would appear underwhelming – sorry guys, but Alvaro Sanchez strikes me as a bit underwhelming. I know that right now AEG wants to get their ship in financial order considering they’re looking to sell their ownership stake. They’re likely to do what any smart business would do: show that they have controlled expenses and several steady revenue streams that would make them an attractive investment. So while the fan in me knows and wants a natural CAM, the pragmatist knows we’ll likely start the season with Camargo there and MAYBE add someone like Sanchez who, like Camargo, is sub-DP in terms of salary. And I don’t mean to knock Sanchez because let’s say we do get him: he could be a revelation on this team; in fact, I’d LOVE for that to happen. It’s just experience shows that while you certainly can find upgrades in Costa Rica and the like, you’re more likely to find more quality (and more expensive talent) in South America (Argentina & Brazil).

And I’ve stated that before about the Dynamo following the Morey model…we should talk about that sometime :)

Speaking of the Morey model...

We could be acquiring assets while building depth.

Now I think that we probably won’t see a DP or non-DP CAM simply because that position has taken a backseat in priority to a quality forward and a RM. Who knows what will happen though.

by Gribbs on Jan 3, 2012 4:59 PM CST up reply actions

Oh

I agree wholeheartedly that we’re doing a Morey-like model in terms of building a team with quality and depth…not All-Star quality but certainly not scrubs.

The issue with looking at a quality forward or RM is much like we saw with Davis this year: when teams focus on our one point of attack, our players became spectators. Now, I love what Camargo brings but he’s not a natural CAM and those tendencies show. I’d love for those to be corrected in the off-season and next season we see him playing comfortably in the middle to last-third of the field but I’m not getting my hopes up. I guess what I’m saying is that I hope that if those suspicions about us not getting a DP/non-DP CAM are true and that we depend on Camargo that he doesn’t become a bottleneck. If he can become more comfortable there and become a secondary or primary point of attack it takes a huge load off Davis and makes everyone else more effective.

One note on the Morey comparisons: the issue with this model is that its built to integrate 1-2 All-Star/DP-level players who turn the team into a beast of a machine. It requires 1-2 players who can create for themselves and others and for everyone else to know and play their roles…we’ve got the role players part down, but without those 1-2 “impact” players you see what happens, particularly with the Rox: we’re very good and very competitive, but we lack that elite punch to separate us from the pack. For the Dynamo we still made it to the Cup with the team we have, but without Davis we fell short. He’s one of those impact players, but we need another who can become another focal point of attack.

It was still close against LA

I also still believe in these Rockets. I like them more than a team with a super star because it shows a lot about the players and how they push each other.

Let’s not sell our Dynamo short. I think we have All-Stars all over the pitch: Cameron, Ashe, Hall, Davis, Ching (definitely missing him as an “impact” player), and I would argue Boswell.

I think the Morey comparisons make for good conversation. There may be disagreements about what qualify in the Morey model. That just means it’s a good topic =D
