Dynamo Open 2012 Pre-Season Camp
It seems like just yesterday the Dynamo played for the MLS Cup in Los Angeles, in fact it was only 66 days ago, but time waits for no one and the new season must get underway. Yesterday at the team's training facilities, the Dynamo did just that, kicking off the 2012 season with the opening of pre-season camp.
It's the first Dynamo camp that doesn't include Brian Ching and Eddie Robinson and it's another reminder of the evolving face of the roster. Everyone was on deck for training except Geoff Cameron and Kofi Sarkodie, both of whom are away on national team duty. Here's the current active roster going in to camp:
Forwards: Will Bruin, Calen Carr, Colin Rolfe, Cam Weaver
Midfielders: Luiz Camargo, Colin Clark, Brad Davis, Alex Dixon, Adam Moffat, Josue Soto, Nathan Sturgis, Je-Vaughn Watson.
Defenders: Corey Ashe, Bobby Boswell, Geoff Cameron, Andre Hainault, Kofi Sarkodie, Jermaine Taylor
Goalkeepers: Tyler Deric, Tally Hall
The rest of the Dynamo draft picks are in camp, but not under contract, so they aren't on the official roster. In addition, there were a couple trialist but I've been unable to get any names associated with those gentlemen. Chris Canetti did say the club will be releasing more information about them in the coming days, so we'll just have to be patient.
Brad Davis spoke with HoustonDynamo.com about the opening of camp:
Not a ton of information yet, but excitement is in the air, optimism is high, and we're inching ever closer to the season opener...and more importantly, the opening of BBVA Compass Stadium in May.

Trialist
I think I read somewhere recently that one of the trailists was Darryl Roberts (T&T International Forward) who played in Holland at one time for for Sparta Rotterdam, among others. Couldn’t find too much in the way of highlights on You Tube, but this goal looks kinda tidy…
A few more
Martek posted a few clips of him in a previous post
Hopefully he can work out for us and be a relatively inexpensive solution who can be paired with Weaver…I think it’d really help
After seeing those clips
Newcomer of the Year! Hands down (but only because Alex Dixon doesn’t qualify.).

However
This guy might not make the roster, true. However, if he does contribute, especially in a position in which we are already thin, then it’s possible that the Dom Kinnear Super Scout legend goes to stratospheric heights.

Positions for spots
RM, FW & D.
So potentially it could be Roberts at FW – unless one of the draftees (Ownby, Okiomah or Aseweh) beats him out, Honduran or one of the draftees (Arreola or Roberts) at RM and maybe Gumby (Creavalle) at D
Either way, though, Dom stands to benefit as all of these guys cost us next to nothing (in most cases, nothing) and could potentially be starters or subs by the end of the season. Well done, good sir
Roberts
I like the guy’s stats. They’re more promising than the dead weight I won’t name. I like the way T&T forwards play. They’re pretty good compared to the other carribean islands

PS
I like how Canetti is opening up about the Cruz trade and just giving insight as to what went down. I suspect its not the full story but I’d say its most of it, or at least the relevant bits. I know one of our complaints last year was the information black-hole that was the FO but that seems to be changing…
Oh
and according to Canetti there are six roster spots open, to be fought for by:
Darryl Roberts (FW)
Warren Creavalle (D/M)
Brian Ownby (M/FW)
Karo Okiomah (FW)
Eder Arreola (FW/M)
Phillip Aseweh (M/FW)
Daniel Roberts (M)
Trialists (TBD)
4 for first team, 2 for supplemental team. It’s going to be an interesting camp for sure, it’ll be competitive…its just a shame someone will be sent packing as they all seem to be happy to be in Orange, at least for now
It is sad
And I think it should be pretty much 5 since we still need that RM

True
I guess it depends…if we can snag someone like Boniek Garcia then hey, that’s a position of need where we could improve instantly with a guy like him. The unsigned guys we have in camp right now are all based on potential; some can contribute now but most likely later on in the year or next. So yeah, priority goes to someone proven who could contribute immediately and if it means less roster spots for those guys trying to make it, it sucks but it is what it is
What sucks more
Is that none of these guys are wingers…

Hopefully
they could be, as some of these “slash” guys (get your heads out of the gutter, Martek & play) – like the FW/M types – could be good wingers. I’m watching this camp rather anxiously to see who emerges
I just read...
that our offer wasn’t high enough for Boniek Garcia. Hopefully we lowballed them and we are going to give them a good offer.
Hopefully
I’m gonna read it the same way you did, that we lowballed them and they’re balking at the offer. But I think Boniek Garcia knows that this is probably his window of opportunity to go abroad…from here he can stay & sign a better deal or go elsewhere. Just like was said in the article about Boyd, if you want to spring-board or revive your career MLS is a great place to do it
gutter emergence
Darryl and David Roberts? What are they trying to do? Confuse us to death? Next thing you know, they’ll go and sign Chris Rolfe!!
Seriously though, hopefully Boniek Garcia will sign. He seems like a creative winger, which we really need on the right. These other guys are all projects.

This club has not gotten better
We have lost two starters , and two subs a solid defender and a solid forward. These guys played with each other and knew how other players played the game. Its hard to replace that.
The Front line needs some help. The experience and leadership of Ching will be missed. Costly was a good sign. Bruin and Weaver will have to work some magic. The back up Strikers got to learn quickly.
The Midfield needs to get better quickly. Davis will miss most of the preseason. Clark and Ashe will replace him but who will replace Cruz? Dixon and Watson will have to get tough. When u start moving Dixon and Watson they get less practice time in the middle. Moffat and Camargo need to stay on the field longer which also increases the chance of injury.
The back line is solid. can we expect Andrew to have another great season? Can Boswell keep it going? Taylor will be an important sub this year.
We need a third goalie the faster we sign a guy the better
Disappointed we could not keep our starting eleven together for another season .
1/2 step back
to take 2 steps forward.
I do agree that we did lose some significant talent & experience in Ching & Cruz, but we’ve put ourselves in a better position for this season and the season after. If we can get someone else to help out at FW and a RM plus a backup defender I like the look of our team this season.
As for goalies, to me, that’s lower on the list considering we have Hall & Deric plus Fernando Pina starting to get more time in the reserves
One injury away
Look at the Texans third string qb is a starter
