Brian Ching Rumors Are Back, Here We Go Again

It's been an interesting day in which a lot and basically nothing has happened at the same time. Here's the details.

First came this tweet from the official Montreal Impact twitter feed:

Next, there was this tweet from FOX26's (Houston's FOX affiliate) Sports Director Mark Berman:

Finally, a full article posted on FOX26's website:

League sources also told FOX 26 the Dynamo are in the advance stages of contract negotiations with Ching that would enable the Dynamo to bring him back to Houston.

A new contract agreement between the Dynamo and Ching must be agreed upon before the trade can be consummated.

So here we go again. Either there is something about the happen very soon or people are going to get in a furor again and get their feelings hurt if a deal can't be reached. If the Dynamo can get Ching's right for a reasonable cost and they are able to rework his contract to not annihilate what cap space Houston has left, it's a great move. We shall see.

I read on mlssoccer.com this morning that he had asked for leave and I’ve been waiting all day to hear the news.

For those wondering, Ching talked to union before preseason about reworking deal. He was told it’s OK in the CBA if he gets value in return.

This was necessary

For the deal to be reworked according to the CBA. Very much in the spirit of the CBA.

value in return...

Since he’s not capable of playing much longer, I predict a deal similar to FC Dallas’ agreement with Daniel Hernandez this offseason. Extend to 3-4 years at a more reasonable salary with an option to retire and transition to coaching, scouting, or some other non-playing capacity mid-contract for the same money (without counting against the cap).

Sounds about right

I’m not sure of the particulars of that deal with Hernandez but the spirit of the deal sounds about right. Make it multi-year with a “transition” built-in to account for the money.

Chron story here

http://www.chron.com/sports/dynamo/article/Dynamo-working-out-deal-with-Impact-to-bring-3312613.php

“We think there’s light at the end of the tunnel in terms of what a trade agreement or what a trade with Montreal would look like,” Dynamo president Chris Canetti said. “Given the nature of those talks, we’ve been given permission to gauge those talks with Brian’s agent about restructuring his contract to work him in under the salary cap.”

Critical

I’d be pleased as punch to have the Cap back, but it has to be something that leaves the club in a good position. Look, things went down and we’ve quietly put together a team with LOTS of potential and we still should have plenty of money left over, I’d hate for a big chunk of that to be spent and cripple our flexibility. Again, from a personal perspective I’d love for him to be able to walk out in May in Orange because he’s earned that, but from a footballing perspective we can’t pay a striker who’s injured and ready to retire DP money. I think he knows that and hopefully we can work with that and everyone is happy. Except Marsch. We can send him a rusted sybian.

I'm torn.

I know he has earned the right to lead the Dynamo into the new stadium and he is a Houston sports icon, but if this trade is lopsided or his contract is large, I’m not a fan. There is a lot to look forward to the way the team is looking now including cap space and I’d hate to see the club jeopardize that for a move that is in large part emotional. I’m just hoping the Dynamo don’t allow themselves to be fleeced by the Impact to appease the fans.

Clear eyes, full bologna sandwiches!

With you all the way

And am hoping that the restructuring deals with this very issue. Flexibility right now is more precious than Ching.

Wait and See

I trust our front office and it sounds like the Dynamo are shooting for around $250k. I’d love to see that money spent on a DP, but since that’s about as likely as a Houston blizzard, welcome back Kahuna. I hope that the front office doesn’t cave to early post-trade fan reactions and whatever we send to Montreal has a big FU attached.

Exactly

I think Canetti & Dom have done a bang-up job over the past season or two in terms of getting high value/low price talent that is solid to very, very good. I know we want a shiny toy DP but if it hasn’t worked out and frankly, it seems for the best. We have young talent and trialists that could fill that gap, and if we get Cap back at a good price we still have flexibility. I would be shocked if they would risk taking down all that hard work for an emotionally huge boost but a clunker of a footballing deal (in terms of price v performance). I think you called it, I see Cap coming back at $200-250K and we send MTL a couple of bucks or a conditional draft pick

One of the funniest tweets of the day for me so far

Lord_Bob:
If Brian Ching goes back to the Houston Dynamo I’m sad. I was really looking forward to that albatross of a contract dragging Montreal down.

Best thing about this is Ching

He’s been a sport and even said he was willing to take a reduced contract. Not many people are that classy and WANT to stay. A lot of athletes follow the money. Sign of a classy guy right there.

game by game

Not sure if it’s allowed in MLS what with the salary cap, but i think it would be in the dynamos best interest to pay him based on play time, something like 15k for a start or 5k for a sub. this would work out to be like 300k for 20 starts, which would be a great compromise for the player and team if the number ended around that much playing time. I know players in england can get contracts like this, big question mark for the US though.
