2013 MLS SuperDraft: Houston Dynamo select Jason Johnson with the 13th pick

Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

The Dynamo selected Generation Addidas striker Jason Johnson with the 13th pick in the draft.

With the 13th pick in the MLS Superdraft, the Houston Dynamo selected Jason Johnson. The reigning Atlantic-10 Offensive Player of the Year scored 26 goals with 10 assists in three years at Virginia Commonwealth University.

A Jamaican international (played with the U-23 side during Olympic qualifiers, made his senior team debut in February 2010 against Argentina), he'll join countrymen Je-Vaughn Watson and Jermaine Taylor and raise the question on whether or not Dom Kinnear has a thing for Jamaicans with first names starting with 'J'.

All joking aside, he fills a need the Dynamo had. Even with the trade for Omar Cummings, there was a dearth of strikers on the roster - especially with Macoumba Kandji out of contract and Calen Carr out with an ACL tear - and Johnson will presumably get a chance to hone his skills with the reserve squad.

The MLS website has this to say, in regards to Johnson and his skills:

"Very, very good striker and dangerous all over the field ... Has a hunger to score goals ... His forte is getting behind defenders and making good runs. He's very mobile ... Very athletic, decent technically and a pretty good finisher ... Dangerous from 30 yards in ... Athleticism is his greatest asset ... Has all the tools. He's fit and strong enough ... At the Player Combine his stock will go up ... Left-sided ... Keeps you honest ... Wants to get the ball and be dangerous with it ... He can go on and do well ... Johnson joins in the attack and helps build ... Good work rate ... Sometimes he does switch off and does not put in a complete effort. He takes breathers here and there, but he improved on that throughout 2012 ... Can he keep up in MLS from a mental standpoint?"

Not the position that I would've drafted, but with what I'm seeing, I can't find much to argue with. I'll leave you with a video of his college highlights from last season.
