The other day I was talking with a co-worker about some disagreement that had happened earlier and I used the word "kerfuffle". Looking quite puzzled, my co-worker ask what was a kerfuffle. I explained it meant a disagreement or commotion. Later I thought about where I had learned the word kerfuffle and after some thought I believe that I heard it while watching the EPL. So I got thinking more about what words and phrases have crept into my vocabulary by watching soccer.
"Pitch" and "kits" are two of the most obvious examples but I find my self only using those words with fellow soccer fanatics. With casual or newbie soccer fans, I use field and uniforms.
"Handbags at 6 paces" is a phrase I hear myself using. And I have been known to laugh at someone's "howler".
I suppose if my Spanish was better (existent, really), I would be picking some new phrases and words there too (those acceptable in polite company, the others I have a pretty good grasp on).
So has anyone else noticed these unique words and phrases creeping into their vocabulary?
