2012 MLS Supplemental Draft: Dynamo Select Five Players
MLS lives by a simple creed, there is no such thing as too many drafts. Thus today we had our fourth draft of the off-season with the 2012 Supplemental Draft. This is essentially rounds 3-7 of the SuperDraft but in the interest of time, money and general interest, it's been split off in to its own event.
Here's the important thing to understand about this draft. There are some solid young players available so with the right attitude and work ethic, first rounders can definitely make the team. After that, it's just as hit or miss as the lower rounds of any other professional sports draft. Many a great MLS player has been selected in the later rounds of drafts, including Geoff Cameron and Brian Ching, so anything is possible. Plus, Dominic Kinnear is quite good at finding diamonds in the rough, so don't be shocked if a name or two from this draft sticks around.
With those details aside, it's time to take a look at what the Dynamo did in today's draft:
New Dynaman Colin Rolfe speaks
This is from the website of the Arena Soccer League's Louisville Lightning, with whom Houston Dynamo first round pick Colin Rolfe has been training since the end of the NCAA season. It's nice to see this from Rolfe, simply because there are many people in this market who have never even heard of the guy, even though his college accomplishments at Louisville are impressive to say the least.I'm liking that facility there in the background. That turf floor could use some work though, as it looks almost exactly like this one. Knee-killers.
Still, I am thinking that this young man may just need some help with his interviews. Perhaps before he talks to the media again, any media at all, he should watch the following. (I apologize in advance for the salty language.)
Bull Durham, my vote for best sports movie of all time.
2012 MLS Draft: Dynamo Select Colin Rolfe and Warren Creavalle
The Houston Dynamo did not make any trades in today's MLS SuperDraft. Brian Ching is still with Montreal and Andre Hainault is still here, so all that unnecessary hullabaloo caused by a certain Chronicle writer was for naught. Instead the Dynamo added two new players, selecting forward Colin Rolfe and midfielder Warren Creavalle.
Rolfe is a 6-foot, 175 pound striker from the University of Louisville. In four season with the Cardinals, he scored 33 goals (a school record) and had 19 assists. Rolfe was the first Louisville player to be nominated for the Hermann Trophy.
Creavalle is a 6-foot, 155 pound holding midfielder from the University of Central Florida. In his senior season with the Golden Knights, he was named to the All-Conference USA First Team, playing in 17 games, with one goal and three assists. He also made the MAC's Hermann watch list. Creavalle would provide coverage in the midfield behind Luiz Camargo and Adam Moffat.
Both these players look to have potential but will have a lot to prove during training camp to earn their spots on the roster. I'm not trying to be a downer, just being honest. I'm looking forward to seeing what they bring to the table and if Rolfe can potentially play his way in to the rotation up front.
MLS SuperDraft LiveBlog 2012

Somehow, it works out so I am off during the MLS SuperDraft 2012, and thus I've taken on the responsibility of live-blogging the first (and maybe) second round. It's being aired on ESPN2, TSN2 and RDS2 at 11AM CST. That means there are about 3 hours remaining until the Montreal L'Impact -- barring any trades or moves, are on the clock for the 1st overall selection in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. There are a few intriguing prospects the Dynamo might be interested in, and I'll be watching and keeping my eyes on Twitter to see if anything happens beforehand. After the jump is the LiveBlog thread where all the "action" will be available for you to read as it happens.
I'm so excited I can barely contain my enthusiasm.
UPDATE: Kenny Cooper has been traded to NYRB for bunches of allocation money and a 1st rd 2013 SuperDraft pick - Linky
(Trader?) Dom on the MLS Combine
Dom Kinnear - Combine Spotlight from Soccer By Ives on Vimeo.
A quick hit from Soccer By Ives. It's nice to hear Dom's voice discussing the MLS Combine, especially the part on the end where he talks about draft day trade possibilities. We all remember what happened last year, which makes so many MLS mock drafts have less predictive value than a Magic 8 Ball.
MLS SuperDraft 2011: I'm Feeling a Draft in Here
I'll be the first to admit that I don't watch much college soccer, sorry. There's simply too much out there for me to consume to give a great deal of attention to a version of the sport where the clock runs the wrong direction and there are infinite substitutions. That said, I do try to watch the playoffs and Final Four every year to at least have some idea of the potential names that could be coming to MLS.
I say all that to make a point and it is this: I'm really not good at handicapping the draft and trying to determine who the Dynamo might select. Last year was a lot easier since Houston held a high pick and it was more about which players were available when their turn came around. This year, thanks to postseason success, the Dynamo hold the 18th and 37th pick. Figuring out what direction Kinnear will go is more about trying determine if he'll look to supplement a position or simple take the best player available.
There are a couple opinions out there for us to look at though, from people who are more informed (at varying levels) about the college game, who might have a better perspective on what the Dynamo will do.
