MLS held a highly scientific random drawing process today to determine the clubs that would host the first and second stage U.S. Open Cup qualifiers. In other words, they had a coin flip...seriously.
Because of that coin flip, the Dynamo, who will enter the qualifying in the second stage, will host Sporting Kansas City in April (the exact date to be determined). If the Dynamo were to defeat KC, they would host their next qualifier against the winner of the New England Revolution/DC United v Philadelphia Union match. DC and Philly play in a first stage match and then face off with New England.
I probably made that infinitely more confusing that it really is. Here is the breakdown of the Open Cup qualifiers:
First stage
Philadelphia Union at D.C. United
Second stage
New England at DCU-Philly winner
Chivas-Portland winner at San Jose Earthquakes
Sporting Kansas City at Houston Dynamo
Third stage
Colorado/Chicago winner at Chivas v Timbers/San Jose winner
DCU/Philly v NE winner at KC/Houston winner
