Well, the Houston Dynamo took care of business. In the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the Dynamo defeated PDL side FC Tucson 2-0 Wednesday night at BBVA Compass Stadium. The crowd was sparse, the team fielded was reserves, but nonetheless the men in orange got back to their winning ways at home.
Alex Dixon opened up the scoring in the 26th minute, after Mike Chabala crossed the ball into the box. Later on, Giles Barnes fired in a free kick to give Houston an insurance goal.
Tyler Deric was excellent in goal and kept the clean sheet on the night. FC Tucson played a pretty good game and certainly will do well in the PDL. The team was founded in 2010 and is in its early years of growth.
One highlight of the night was 18-year old striker Bryan Salazar making his Dynamo debut. Salazar, who signed a homegrown contract in February, played 60 minutes. The high school senior is scheduled to graduate high school next weekend and will begin training with the first team full time afterwards.
With the victory, the Dynamo will get another shot at FC Dallas in the next round. Dallas will host the fourth round matchup against Houston on June 12 in Frisco.
