UPDATE: Sherrod Selected in Expansion Draft, Traded to San Jose

The Houston Dynamo gambled on Mark Sherrod not being taken in the latest MLS Expansion Draft and they lost as he was picked up by Orlando City SC. Following his selection, he was shipped off to San Jose where he will reunite with former head coach Dominic Kinnear.

The 2014 MLS Expansion draft is over and there were quite a few surprised onlookers over the course of the draft as Orlando City SC managed to shock everyone with Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts as their number 1 overall pick. Ricketts, alongside former Houston Dynamo man Tally Hall will make for a strong goalkeeping tandem unless one of the two is used in a trade.

The Houston Dynamo escaped losing players for most of the draft until the 9th round when Orlando City SC selected up-and-coming forward Mark Sherrod. Following his selection, the Houston Dynamo were allowed to protect another player and they opted to protect recently acquired goalkeeper Joe Willis which gives Houston a solid goalkeeper alongside homegrown product Tyler Deric.

Sherrod found success early in the season for the Dynamo as he proved his talents as a quality hold up player, but also a gifted finisher with strength in the air until a torn ACL sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Mark Sherrod was the last player to be left off the protected list and was one that many Dynamo fans wished was protected due to his high upside. Tony Cascio, who was on loan to Houston from the Colorado Rapids last season, was also selected by Orlando City SC. Orlando now has all three of our ACL crew from last year with Cascio, Sherrod, and Hall.
