The third round of the Lamar Hunt Open Cup took place May 28 and 29 setting up round four which will include MLS teams.
The Lardeo Heat, a PDL team, beat the Ft Lauderdale Strikers 3-2 for the chance to take on the Houston Dynamo. The amateur team pulled off the upset despite their goalie being red carded in the 20th minute and losing a man in the 81st minute. They had initially jumped out to a 2-0 lead but after the red card the Strikers were able to come back and tie the game up 2-2. At the very end of the game Esteban Bayona converted a penalty kick giving the Heat the victory and the chance to take on the Dynamo.
Dynamo affiliate, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds will also be competing in the next round. They defeated RWB Aria 3-2 to move on to the next round and face the Chicago Fire on June 18.
The Heat will travel to Houston to face the Dynamo on June 11, 9PMCT.
