On Monday, Houston Dynamo midfielder Boniek Garcia was named to the Honduras national team's 2014 FIFA World Cup preparatory camp. Boniek is expected to join the national team camp by May 20th, and if he makes the final 23-man roster it will be his second consecutive World Cup having played for Honduras in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Honduras plays three friendlies stateside prior to their trip Brazil for the 2014 World Cup. Los Catrachos face Turkey on May 29th at RFK Stadium, Israel on June 1st here in town at BBVA Compass Stadium, and England on June 7th in Miami, Flordia.
The Honduras national team is part of Group E for the 2014 FIFA World Cup group stages. Also in Group E are Switzerland, Ecuador and France. They open the group stage against France on June 15th in Porto Alegre.
Boniek played in all 16 of Honduras' qualifying matches for the 2014 World Cup, scoring one goal. In total, he has 92 caps which is 5th best all-time for Honduras national team caps.
On the one hand, I am really glad he's getting the call-up as he deserves it. There isn't a player in Major League Soccer who puts in the kind of work and effort day in and day out that Boniek Garcia does. On the other hand, we're really going to miss Boniek while he is gone.
