Getting To Know Our 2015 USL PRO Affiliate: The Charleston Battery

After The Relationship With The Pittsburgh RiverHounds Ended For Houston And Vancouver Parted Ways With Charleston, The Dynamo And Battery Have Signed An Affiliate Deal For The 2015 Campaign

Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports
Familiarity, winning, and a mutual respect laid the foundation for the Houston Dynamo and Charleston Battery to strike an affiliation for the 2015 season. If the Battery's name sounds familiar, you may recall it from when they've faced off with the Dynamo in the past at the US Open Cup and Carolina Challenge Cup. So here's a scouting report on our new affiliate: The Charleston Battery

Quick Kicks:

Located in Charleston, South Carolina

Official Website: charlestonbattery.com

Play their games at Blackbaud Stadium, which upon completion in April of 1999, became the first privately funded soccer specific stadium built in the United States.

Official Supporter's Group is The Regiment

Team Colors: Yellow, Black, and Red

Take A Look Back:

The club was founded in 1993.

Titles won: 2012 USL Pro Championship, 2010 USL 2nd division regular season & playoff champion, USL A-League titles 1996 & 2003

Have hosted the Carolina Challenge Cup since 2004

Current Club:

The Coach and General Manager

Michael Anhaeuser is the club's coach and general manager. He is in his 11th year as coach of the Battery. Anhaeuser was the USL1 Coach Of The Year in 2007. He also was a player for the Battery and before that, won a national title as a player at Indiana University.

Assistant Coach

Troy Lesesne enters his 2nd year as an assistant. A Charleston man through and through, he played for the College Of Charleston before starring for the Battery. This past season he was a big part of the development of players on loan from the Whitecaps.

Roster

The roster will continue to take shape as the loans from the Dynamo are established. The Battery finished in 5th place in the table in 2014, including 6 players loaned from the Whitecaps.

As of now, current notable players include:

Forward Dane Kelly 75 appearances and 25 goals.

Goalkeeper Odisnel Cooper made 23 appearances in goal since 2013.

Defender Quinton Griffith has made 24 appearances for the Battery and 31 appearances for his native national team of Antigua and Barbuda scoring 5 goals.

Midfielder Jared vanSchaik has made 41 appearances for the Battery and was a 3rd round MLS Superdraft selection in 2011.

Defender/Midfielder Amadou Sanyang has made 53 appearances for the Battery.

Midfielder Zack Prince has made 83 appearances for the Battery.

Defender John Wilson has played over 200 games with the Battery and has been the club's defender of the year on multiple occasions.

All in all, it looks to me like the young loanees from the Dynamo will have a successful and stable place to hone their skills for the 2015 season. Leading up to and during this coming season, I will be providing our readers a weekly piece, Carson's Charleston Charge. In each edition, I will review the past week in Charleston soccer!
