Highlights, best of the best, and playoff implications for every team in Major League Soccer.
DC United 2, NYCFC 1
DC United: Fabian Espindola 73’, Alvaro Saborio 90+2’
NYCFC: Frank Lampard 1’
A meaningless result for NYCFC here, who have virtually no shot at the playoffs, but 3 very important points for DC. The red and black have already clinched a spot, but the win here puts them in 2nd place in the very crowded Eastern Conference. Now at 48 points, the New England Revolution, Columbus Crew, and Toronto FC are all very close behind them, at 47, 47, and 46 points, respectively.
Toronto FC 3, Philadelphia Union 1
Toronto FC: Sebastian Giovinco 28’, Jozy Altidore 63’, Richie Marquez OG 90+1’
Philadelphia Union: Steven Vitoria 66’
Very similar implications to the DC/NYCFC match. Meaningless for the hapless Union, but very important points for Toronto.
New York Red Bulls 2, Columbus Crew 1
New York Red Bulls: Lloyd Sam 12’, Bradley Wright-Phillips 21’
Columbus Crew: Justin Meram 9’
The Red Bulls are sitting pretty in first place thanks to this win, and the Crew are still battling it out in the middle of the table for a high seeding.
Orlando City SC: Cyle Larin 33’, Seb Hines 80’
Montreal Impact: Dominic Oduro 43’
Another game, another goal for the unbelievable rookie Cyle Larin, who helped the Lions secure three vital points for them if they have any chance of the postseason. As important as it was for Orlando to get the win, it was equally important that Montreal not get a win. Montreal is in the last spot above the red line in the East, but only one point ahead of OCSC, 42 to 41.
Chicago Fire 3, New England Revolution 1
Chicago Fire: David Accam 51’, Harry Ship 59’, Gilberto 88’
New England Revolution: Juan Agudelo 31’
Congratulations on your dominant victory, Chicago. You’re now only 12 points out of contention, and New England is still going to be playing in November.
Sporting Kansas City: Krisztian Nemeth’
This was not the result the Timbers were looking for. With three points, they would have been right back in the hunt, but a loss ties them on points with the San Jose Earthquakes at 44. However, based on goal differential, they are back below the red line, looking up at Sporting, in 4th place.
San Jose Earthquakes 1, Vancouver Whitecaps 1
San Jose Earthquakes: Cristian Techera 39’
Vancouver Whitecaps: Chris Wondolowski 62’
The Quakes were surely hoping for a win here, but as stated above, just the point puts them above the Timbers and above the line.
FC Dallas: Mauro Diaz 25’, David Texeira 51’, Kellyn Acosta 53’, David Texeira 90+3’
Houston Dynamo: Ricardo Clark 36’
It’s officially over at this point. The Dynamo had a mathematical chance to maybe win out and sneak it, but FC Frisco really put the nail in the coffin. Time to look forward to a long offseason of picking apart all the problems with this team.
Real Salt Lake: Joao Plata 33’, Luke Mulholland 43’
Colorado Rapids: Kevin Doyle 16’
No real league implications here, neither of these sides is going anywhere.
Seattle Sounders: Chad Barrett 90+3’
LA Galaxy: Robbie Keane 36’
The point from this game just barely puts LA in first place in the West, ahead of FC Dallas 51-50. Seattle is right there in the middle of the pack now, in 5th.
