US, Trinidad and Tobago play to a dull scoreless draw

Jurgen Klinsmann's seat isn't getting any cooler after his side came to a scoreless stalemate with Caribbean opponents Trinidad and Tobago. Aside from a few select instances, chances were scarce for both teams, leaving the fans in Port of Spain without much to cheer about.

The US played a 4-4-2 formation, similar to what they employed against St. Vincent and the Grenadines, with only one change. Michael Orozco entered at right back, pushing DeAndre Yedlin to midfield and Gyasi Zardes to forward along with Jozy Altidore. Fabian Johnson earned another start at left midfield after a blistering performance in St. Louis at the position, until Darlington Nagbe was subbed on and Johnson moved back to defense.

Just like against St. Vincent, it was a slow, sloppy start for the Americans. Trinidad jumped out to an early chance, firing a shot off-target just seconds in. The hosts were on the front-foot for a considerable portion of the first half and parts of the second, but didn't test Tim Howard enough to threaten for a goal.

The Yanks had a couple huge chances to score. Zardes hit the crossbar with a point-blank header and Jermaine Jones's long-range blast was tipped off the bar by Jan-Michael Williams's reaching finger-tips. Aside from a few semi-dangerous crosses whipped in by Yedlin and co., it wasn't a great night for the United States.

They now have four points, tied for tops in the group with their most recent opponents. Guatemala defeated St. Vincent 4-0 to move to three points ahead of the US-Trinidad contest.

Although they should still qualify for the daunted Hex, the Americans would have liked a better result in the final competitive match of 2015. The question remains, will Klinsmann last the entire 2018 cycle?
