After opening the season unbeaten through two matches, the Houston Dash dropped their first match 3-2 against the Boston Breakers in front of 2,376 supporters Sunday at Soliders Field Soccer Stadium in Boston, MA.
Julie King opened the scoring in the 8th minute, netting home a strike during a scramble in front of the net off Rafina's corner kick. The goal marked King's first of the season.
A scary moment came early in the match when Dash defender Stephanie Ochs went down after getting tangled up with Stephanie McCaffrey. The defender suffered a right knee contusion on the play and was subsequently subbed off for Carleigh Williams. The substitution marked the rookie's first appearance of the season.
Jessica McDonald equalized for the Dash in the 68th minute. Morgan Brian's through ball found McDonald on a dead run and the forward chipped Alyssa Naeher 1v1 for her second goal of the match.
In the 35th minute, McDonald headed home Kealia Ohai's cross inside the far post to cut the Breakers lead to one before halftime.
Four minutes earlier, Nazem Ezurike also netted her first of the season after receiving a low cross from McCaffery and placed a one-time finish past Henninger.
Despite a brace from Jessica McDonald, Carli Lloyd's own goal in the 72nd minute was the difference for Boston. Kristie Mewis free kick was saved by keeper Bianca Henninger but deflected off Lloyd and into the net.
The Breakers looked poised offensively and out shot Houston 18 to 11 for their first victory this season. The Dash return home next Saturday for their first meeting against defending champs FC Kansas City.
