Houston vs. New England Final Score: hours of rain delays end with late night 2-0 Dynamo loss

After 3 straight unbeaten, a nearly 5 hour battle in the rain ends with a disappointing 2-0 Dynamo loss.

If you went to bed early Saturday instead of sitting through hours of rain delays, then you were one of the lucky ones.

The Houston Dynamo traveled to Foxboro Saturday to take on the New England Revolution at Gillete Stadium. This was a critical contest for Houston, as they sat just one point behind the Seattle Sounders, and would have pulled ahead of them on goal differential with a result.

Saturday's match started well for Houston, who didn't create quality chances but maintained possession and made good passes. In the 13th minute, he referee sent both sides back to the locker room after lightning from an approaching thunderstorm struck near the stadium. The match was delayed for 109 minutes until the storm passed.

After play resumed, the Dynamo continued to look sharp on the ball and had two good chances in the 25th and 27th, the first a near post header that David Horst missed high, and the second a sailed strike from Alex Lima off of a Sheanon Williams throw in.

New England and the Dynamo finished the half, but the refs blew the game dead again during halftime, delaying the start of the second half until 10:30 CT. When the match resumed, the stadium was virtually empty.

Coming out of halftime New England had the Dynamo defense against the ropes, and the only thing keeping them in the game was the phenomenal keeping of Tyler Deric. Unfortunately, in the end the New England attack was more than he could keep up with. In the 69th, a cross by New England was deflected and bounced around the box until it found the feet of Jose Goncalves, who delivered a near post strike to give the Revs a 1-0 lead.

Dynamo substitutes Erick Torres and Boniek Garcia provided a definite spark after NE's goal and led to a couple of quality chances, but Houston was unable to find an equalizer. The Revs called it a wrap in the 88th; a streaking run by Lee Nguyen down the left side was crossed for an easy tap-in for Juan Agudelo.

It only gets tougher for Houston next week. The Dynamo will go coast to coast to take on the Timbers at Providence Park Saturday night.
