Little more than a week after traveling to Seattle and suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Seattle Reign FC, the Houston Dash now look for a little redemption as the NWSL 2015 season inches closer to the playoffs.
Last Wednesday, Seattle proved why they are the leaders in the league. While the game was tied 1-1 at the half, the Reign offense used the advantage of a corner kick to gain the lead - Rachel Corsie would give her team the lead off Stephanie Cox's kick. Seattle's defense also was significant in helping to shut down top Houston scorers Jessica McDonald and Carli Lloyd.
They also were able to control most of the midfield play, forcing Houston to play in the wings which is not their strongest suit this season. Forward Kealia Ohai continued to prove her prowess, notching the lone goal for the Dash early on.
Going into Friday's match, Houston sits in sixth place in the league standings - a very iffy prospect for the playoffs as they are five points behind the Washington Spirit in the final playoff position. It'll be very important for Houston to grab some points against Seattle at home. After Friday, they will have one last regular season match.
Five points is a lot to make up in two games, especially with one again the seemingly unstoppable Seattle Reign. The Dash will need to get control of the game early and not allow any leads to slip away. Ohai and McDonald could provide just the offense spark needed, along with the help of Lloyd. Defensively, Houston will be without Ella Masar who is on a yellow card suspension. Keeping track of Seattle's offense and helping funnel the ball through the midfield will be crucial for the Dash's backline.
Kick off is set for 7 p.m. CT Friday, Aug. 21 at BBVA Compass Stadium.
