The Houston Dynamo Sign Defender Jalil Anibaba

The Houston Dynamo bolstered their defensive depth by signing the versatile Jalil Anibaba

Jennifer Buchanan-USA TODAY Sports

The offseason roller coaster continues as the Houston Dynamo announced the signing of defender Jalil Anibaba earlier today. Anibaba had played for the Chicago Fire, the Seattle Sounders, and most recently Sporting Kansas City. Defensive depth had been a concern for the Dynamo after Jermaine Taylor's selection in the 2015 MLS Re-Entry Draft.

Anibaba is a versatile defender capable of playing on the left or right side of defense, though his favored position is at center back. The new Dynamo man will compete with Raul Rodriguez, David Horst, DaMarcus Beasley, and Sheanon Williams for time on the field. Anibaba's athleticism and versatility provide the Dynamo with valuable depth in defense.

Sporting Kansas City had left Anibaba unprotected in the 2015 MLS Re-Entry Draft and he went undrafted through both stages of the draft meaning he is free to be approached by any club on a first come, first serve basis. Anibaba was due $120,000 in base salary last year which means the Dynamo likely signed him at a bargain.

The Dynamo have been one of the busiest sides in MLS this offseason. The club has re-signed a few veteran players, added new players, said farewell to a club icon, and has even had their ownership group shaken up. Anibaba should be able to fill in and add to the competition across the back line. Oh, and he already knows how to score against FC Dallas.
