After passing on Janine Beckie with their fifth and sixth picks fans began to worry that the Houston Dash would once again pass on Janie Beckie. In the end the Dash selected the forward, with the eighth pick of the NWSL Draft, who spent her college years playing for Texas Tech.
Beckie was finalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy in 2015. Beckie scored nearly 60 goals in her time at Texas Tech. She played in eight games for Tech in 2015 and scored four goals and had three assists. She was the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in back-to-back years.
The Houston Dash finished the 2015 NWSL season in fifth place after spending the later part of the season hoping to make the playoffs. They had the fifth, sixth and eighth picks in the 2016 NWSL Draft. Earlier in the week the Dash traded forwards Jessica McDonald and Tiffany McCarty creating room on the roster for more froward talent on the roster. The Dash also selected defender Cari Roccaro and Rachel Daly.
