Sunday was the final day of the MLS regular season. Dubbed Decision Day all ten games kicked off at the same time. Houston went into the game against the Rapids looking to avoid winning the Wooden Spoon while Colorado was hoping to win the Supporters’ Shield. The Rapids were also looking to go unbeaten at home for the 2016 season.
Houston’s Andrew Wenger put the men in orange on the board in the 20th minute of the game. Mauro Manotas crossed the ball into the box but Tim Howard got a hand on it to keep it out. The ball went Wenger’s direction and the midfielder was able to run up and tap the ball in to give Houston a 1-0 lead.
Alex got a turn over in the 66th minute of the game as he approached goal he crossed the ball intending to find Wenger, but the ball was a little too far in front of Wenger. The ball eventually found its way to Manotas, but his shot was a just wide of the net. Colorado was then able to take the ball down to the other end of the field. Hairston crossed the ball in and Sheanon Williams slipped allowing Shkelzen Gashi to finish and draw the Rapids level 1-1.
The Rapids had 20 shots in the game eight of which came in the first half. Houston had eight shots for the whole game with just two in the first half. The Rapids seemed to dominate the game but were unable to do much with the shots that they had. They controlled possession in the game, finding themselves with the ball 59.3% of the time.
Ending things in a 1-1 tie meant that the Rapids failed to pry the Supporters’ Shield from FC Dallas and Houston managed to avoid winning the Wooden Spoon.
And that’s all she wrote for the 2016 regular season.
