Dynamo take defender in Re-entry Draft

MLS: LA Galaxy at Real Salt Lake Jeff Swinger-USA TODAY Sports

Thursday, the Houston Dynamo selected Leonardo in the second stage of the MLS Re-entry Draft. Their selection gives them the exclusive right to negotiate with him for the 2017 season.

Leonardo is a naturalized US Citizen who was born in Brazil and would not count as an International Player.

The defender has played for the LA Galaxy since 2010 when he came to the league on loan from São Paolo in the Brazilian Campeonato. In 2012, he joined LA permanently on a free transfer. Leonardo has played in 85 career MLS regular-season matches with 79 starts and has scored two goals. The center back won three MLS Cups with the Galaxy and was the team’s 2015 Defender of the Year. Leonardo missed much of the 2016 season due to injury. He played one game for LA Galaxy II last season.

The Dynamo selected Dylan Remick in first stage of the Re-entry Draft.
