The Houston Dynamo host New York City FC on Friday night in NYCFC’s first trip to BBVA Compass Stadium. Houston was hoping to get their third straight win of the season, however, goals from David Villa dashed those hopes.
For the most part it was a quiet first half for both teams with never having a great chance in front of goal. The Dynamo were awarded a free kick in the 39th minute after Boniek Garcia was tripped up. Boniek took the ensuing kick but Josh Saunders was able to punch away the kick.
McNamara nearly started the second half with a goal for NYCFC. McNamara went right through the Dynamo backline, getting into the box and getting off a shot. His shot was low and went right to Joe Willis who had no trouble stopping the shot.
NYCFC would get on the board after David Villa converted a corner kick. Villa was able to take the corner and turn to the end line scoring on an angle to give his team a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute.
The Dynamo attempted to answer a minute later as Andrew Wenger fed the ball to Alex Lima. Alex’s shot went just over the bar to keep things 1-0.
Raul Rodriguez made a great run in the 73rd minute as he passed the ball to Wenger who then sent the ball back to him. Rodriguez took a shot at the net but the ball went off of the outside of the post.
Villa extended the lead in stoppage time scoring on a shot from the top of the 18. The stoppage time goal left the Dynamo no time and no chance for a come back as they fell 2-0 to NYCFC.
NYCFC dominated possession controlling the ball 57.5% of the game. They two teams were level in number of shots - 10 - on the night. However, the Dynamo managed to get 0 of their shots on target.
Next week the Dynamo host the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night.
