After beating Sporting Kansas City in the knockout round of the MLS playoffs Houston advanced to now face the Timbers. It took Houston an extra thirty minutes to get the game winning goal over Sporting. The Timbers for their part had the first round bye after finishing 2017 at the top of the Western Conference.
