It’s months away, but Major League Soccer recently announced the home openers of all 23 clubs in the league for the start of the 2018 MLS season and the Houston Dynamo will host the sophomore club Atlanta United FC March 3rd at BBVA Compass Stadium.

Last season the Dynamo made it to the Western Conference Finals in Wilmer Cabrera’s first year as Head Coach. Cabrera and the Dynamo front office retooled the team to suit Cabrera’s preferred style of play which turned the club around following three seasons of missed playoff opportunities. 2018 should be a year that we build on last season’s successes and it will begin with tough test against Atlanta United FC in its second season in the league.
Atlanta United FC put together a strong run for an expansion side finishing last year 4th in the Eastern Conference, but falling out of the playoffs to Columbus Crew SC on penalties. Atlanta’s expectations are high and they’ve already made an offseason splash with their acquisition of Portland Timbers’ Darlington Nagbe. The previous meeting between Houston and Atlanta was a disappointing 4-1 loss for the Dynamo as Atlanta was led by Miguel Almiron’s hat-trick at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
Houston has typically been dominant in home openers amassing a 7-1-4 record in them. Last season the Dynamo were able to best the reigning champs the Seattle Sounders and played them to a 2-1 victory at BBVA Compass Stadium with Cubo Torres and Romell Quioto leading the way.
There are still some big decisions to be made for the Dynamo, but it’s still fun to look ahead to 2018 given the quality we saw on the pitch in 2017.
Kick off will be at 2:30 PM CT Saturday March 3rd at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, TX.
