Houston Derby
Thursday was leg 2 of the Houston Derby between the Houston Regals SCA and the Houston Dutch Lions F.C. of the NPSL. The match played out as a good rivalry should. Most of the first half was all Dutch Lions with plenty of great chances that just couldn’t find the back of the net. The Lions did get on the board first when Carlos Acevedo scored his 4th of the year in the 36’. After that goal it was more of the same as the Lions created many chances but just could not break through. The score was 1-0 Lions at the half.
As the second half started the match seemed to take a turn in the Houston Regals favor. The Regals came out firing off the counter creating chances that they didn’t have in the opening half. They were finally able to equalize when Simon Okologo scored in the 67’ to bring the score equal at 1. Things started to look bad for the Lions when Oumar Fofana drew a yellow in the box giving the Regals a PK in the 82’. Marvin Sanchez converted the PK to bring the score 2-1 in the Regals favor. The Lions managed to bring it level again in the 89’ when Jose Pablo Covarrubias scored to make it 2-2. That is when the heat started to rise on both side. The Regals drew a red after Noe Garcia received his second yellow of the match in the 90’. At this point the Lions were looking to leave with three points after going a man up. With 4’ of extra time added and being a man up over the Regals, the Lions just couldn’t find the net after finding the crossbar a number of times. When the whistle blew the sides played out to a 2-2 draw.

The Lions went on to score three straight goals in the 52’ (Archie Massen), 56’ (Jesus Cortes), and the 71’ (Jesus Cortes). This put the Lions up 4-1.
