BBVA Compass Stadium Charities Cup to feature Cruz Azul, raise relief funds

The ninth annual BBVA Compass Stadium Charities Cup will pit the Dynamo and Mexican club Cruz Azul, with profits going to relief for Hurricane Harvey

MLS: San Jose Earthquakes at Houston Dynamo Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

The annual BBVA Compass Stadium Charities Cup has been running for eight years, each time pitting the Houston Dynamo in a friendly against an international club. This year Liga MX’s Cruz Azul is coming to town with the match being broadcast nationally for the first time (on Univision Deportes) and funds being donated to the city’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.

It will take place on October 5th at BBVA (tickets here). Prior to the match, a small-sided celebrity contest will take place. Univision Deportes All-Stars will face off in a seven-on-seven game against a team of Dynamo Legends, including Brian Ching, Dwayne De Rosario, and Brad Davis. No indication on whether that Univision team will be the one Stu Holden has discussed putting together.

If it in fact is, stars from all over have expressed interest: Jozy Altidore, Mia Hamm, Carli Lloyd, AJ DeLaGarza, Landon Donovan, Brian McBride, Taylor Twellman, and Mike Magee, to name a few. This event will be a great way to further raise money and raise the spirits of Houston.

The Dynamo, Major League Soccer, and MLS Works have donated $1 million to the relief efforts already, to go along with the outpouring of support seen throughout the sporting world.

Update:

Stu is working on his own game to help raise funds for Houston.
