The Houston Dynamo are in action on Monday night against the Seattle Sounders. The Dynamo are on the road as they look to keep their unbeaten streak going to finish the season strong. Monday’s game will be the first time the two have faced each other this season and the two will face each other one more time this season on October 21 in Houston.
Houston is coming off of a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes. In a turn of the tables Houston actually came from two goals down to score late in the game for the win. Chris Wondolowski converted a penalty kick in the 37th minute to start the scoring. Alejandro Fuenmayor scored an own goal to help San Jose double their lead to 2-0 eight minutes after Wondo converted the pk. Mauro Manotas continued his scoring dominance for the Dynamo getting their first goal of the game in the 56th minute. Tomas Martinez scored minutes later to draw the game level at 2-2. But it was the 87th minute goal from Romell Quioto that gave the Dynamo the win. The win extended their undefeated streak to four games if you count their USOC Championship win (and we do).
Last weekend the Sounders got a big 4-0 win over the Colorado Rapids. Raúl Ruidíaz scored in the 22nd and 73rd minutes to get a brace in the game. In the 52nd minute Nicolás Lodeiro converted a penalty kick to give the Sounders a 2-0 lead and the second goal from Ruidiaz made it 3-0. The final goal came in the 80th minute from Víctor Rodríguez who sealed the 4-0 win.
While both teams are coming off of wins they are looking at different ends to the season. Houston is in 10th place in the Western Conference with little hope of making the playoffs. They will be eliminated from playoff contention this weekend if they lose or if Real Sale Lake defeats the Portland Timbers. The Sounders are in 5th place in the West but haven’t clinched a playoff berth yet. They can clinch this weekend if they beat the Dynamo and the Galaxy lose to Sporting Kansas City and the Timbers and RSL tie.
The Dynamo have several players on the injury report this week. Philippe Senderos and Eric Alexander are listed as out with a hamstring injury while Jared Watts is out with a hip injury. Mac Steeves is also out after having hip surgery. Defender Leonardo is questionable with a right adductor injury. The Sounders have four players listed as out for the Monday game. Jordan Morris, Felix Chenkam, Harry Shipp and Brad Smith are all out for the game.
Things kick off in Seattle at 9:30 pm CT on October 8.
