When the Houston Dynamo announced the creation of RGVFC, they mentioned countless times that the Rio Grande Valley area is a soccer hotbed. Last year, the Toros capitalized on the nearby talent and added local product Omar Ontiveros to the roster. This offseason, the defender has signed to return for another year.
“I’m extremely excited to be back with the team. I’m looking forward to having a great year and being healthy this season. More than anything, I’m anxious for the season start,” Ontiveros says. While his time on the pitch was limited last season due to injury, he’s ready to do what it takes to help his team win this year. “Helping the team win the USL Cup is one of my goals. In order for that to be accomplished, we will need to be strong defensively and tough to get by and scored on,” he explains. “We have to be solid in the back and if we do that, we will be just fine winning games.”
While every player has pride in playing well for their club, Ontiveros has the extra motivation of representing his hometown well. The Pharr native says, “It truly is a one of a kind feeling for me because I have a lot of support from the valley, and it’s a dream come true to be playing for my hometown team. But at the same time, there are other goals like moving up to the first team in Houston that I want to accomplish.”
Not only does he have the home field advantage with crowd support, he also knows the best spots to get food around town. For someone visiting the Valley, Omar suggests Mi Taco Ponchos on 10th St.
Ontiveros and the Toros get their season underway March 16th against Saint Louis FC at H-E-B Park.
