A New Season Begins
The 2018 USL season will officially kickoff in South Texas. In the first regular season action of the year, it will be RGVFC hosting Saint Louis FC tonight.
Talkin’ Toros
Todd Wharton on the excitement of opening the season at home:
“HEB Park is the best stadium in the league, so it’s always fun to play there in front of our great fan base. It’s a good opportunity for us to get a win to start the season and hopefully be better at home this year than we were last year.”
The Good Guys: Rio Grande Valley FC Toros
It will be the official beginning of the Gerson Echeverry era this evening. The former Seton Hall head coach will be the third man to lead the Toros in their three year history, following Wilmer Cabrera and Junior Gonzalez.
Wharton will be a cornerstone of this year’s Toros and will try to lead them back to the playoffs. Newcomers Conor Donovan and Jesus “Chuy” Enriquez will be big boosts to the club.
The Bad Guys: Saint Louis FC
RGVFC’s opponent is making a return to the Western Conference in 2018. Last season, Saint Louis FC finished 12th in the Eastern Conference. Christian Volesky, the club’s leading scorer in 2017 returns. A big signing by the club was Tomas Gomez. The former Rochester Rhinos goalkeeper was the Golden Glove winner, lowest goals against average, in both 2016 and 2017. Corey Hertzog and Wal Fall follow the club from the Eastern Conference as well, from Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Rochester respectively.
The biggest addition of the offseason is on the sidelines. Anthony Pulis takes over as head coach The son of current Middlesbrough manager Tony, Anthony replaces Preki and comes to the club from Orlando City B. He’s regarded as a high-level coach and will look to get Saint Louis to the playoffs for the first time in club history.
