Friday, the Houston Dynamo will host C.F. Monterrey in the 2018 BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup. Each year the game raises funds for a different Houston-area charity this year match the exhibition game will benefit KIPP Opportunity Campus.

Last year, the game benefited the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund but this year’s funds will help benefit education. The KIPP Opportunity Campus includes KIPP NEXUS elementary and KIPP NEXUS middle school which is located in Northwest Houston.

Houston Dynamo midfielder Arturo Alvarez is an alumnus of the KIPP educational system.

“It’s great to see the Houston Dynamo support a great school like KIPP,” Alvarez said in a team release about the match. “KIPP is all about making sure that students work hard in school so that they can accomplish any goals they set for themselves, and taking no shortcuts! As a former KIPPster, I’ve kept that mentality throughout my soccer career and continue to apply it every day.”

CF Monterrey is one of the oldest clubs playing in Liga MX and was the first club that the Dynamo played in the Charities Cup. The first game charity at Robertson Stadium was played back on October 11, 2009. They Dynamo won 2-1 thanks to goals from Geoff Cameron and Dominic Oduro.
