The Houston Dynamo will host Minnesota United in the next round of the 2018 Lamar Hunt Open Cup. This is the first time that Minnesota United has advanced to the Round of 16. Round four was the first round that MLS teams participated in the tournament.
Wednesday night the Houston Dynamo defeated NTX Rayados to advance to the Round of 16. The Dynamo signed seven players from Rio Grande Valley FC to short term contracts for the game. The first half was a quiet one but things broke open for the Dynamo in the second half as they scored five goals while shutting out the amateur club from Dallas. Memo Rodriguez and Aldo Quintanilla each had a brace in the game.
Minnesota United defeated FC Cincinnati in penalty kicks 3-1 on Wednesday night to advance. Neither team was able to score during regulation or in extra time. Minnesota was able to sink three of their penalty kicks to Cincinnati’s one to claim the win.
The two teams played each other earlier this season in MLS play with Minnesota claiming a 2-1 victory over the Dynamo.
The date and time of the game is to be determined.
