Another home game another atrocious showing from PRO referees. The Dynamo had three players shown red cards and a head coach ejected in the tunnel as they fell 1-0 to Sporting Kansas City.
Just fifteen minutes into the game referee Chris Penso issued a straight red card to the Houston Dynamo’s Alejandro Fuenmayor after colliding with Gianluca Busio. Busio went up for a header and Fuenmayor ran in a jumped up on the play. The defender turned as he jumped and his shoulder hit Busio between the shoulder blades. Penso also issued a yellow card to Alberth Elis for expressing his displeasure with the call.
During half time Penso made the decision to also sent off head coach Wilmer Cabrera for ‘irresponsible behavior’. Michael Dellarusso took over the head coaching duties for the second half of the game.
The Dynamo continued to push in the second half in spite of being down to 10-men. In the 56th minute Elis put a header on target but Tim Melia was able to grab it on the bounce. The Dynamo came close to scoring on a counter attack in the 63rd minute as Romell Quioto ran down the left wing before crossing the ball to Elis. The shot from Elis was right at Melia who made the save. Quioto was there on the rebound but his shot was over the net.
The was a card party with Penso refereeing the game with Joe Willis getting a yellow card for dissent after expressing his displeasure over a non-card after Elis was taken down. By the end of the game there were six yellow cards issued to Dynamo players and three red cards. While SKC ended the game with two yellow cards. Penso was clearly attempting to use yellow cards to reel in a game that he never any control over.
Diego Rubio scored in the 74th minute to give Sporting the 1-0 lead. Busio passed the ball to Rubio who had beaten his defender. After chesting the ball down, Rubio shot the ball after it took a bounce sending it past Willis who had gone down to try and stop the ball.
Things only got more out of control in stoppage time as the Dynamo had two more players ejected. Darwin Ceren was ejected on a weak hands to the face call which resulted in a clashing of the two sides. During that clash Elis put a shoulder to the back of Felipe Gutierrez and was tossed from the game as well. The final whistle blew not long after Elis’ ejection leaving the Dynamo with a home loss.
Despite being down a man for most of the game the Dynamo finished the game with 10 shots with four of them on target. Sporting had 14 shots in the game and also had four on target.
The Dynamo have a Wednesday night US Open Cup game against LAFC and then a game next Saturday against the Columbus Crew. The red cards shouldn’t affect the game against LAFC but will cause all the players to miss the Saturday game against the Crew.
