With the second pick in today’s MLS Re-Entry Draft the Dynamo selected midfielder Joe Corona. The 30 year old was also selected by Austin FC in last week’s expansion draft. Corona did not opt out of the Re-Entry Draft and with the selection, the Dynamo now own his MLS rights.
Corona spent the last two seasons with the LA Galaxy, making 47 appearances for the Southern California club. Before joining MLS, Corona began his club career in Mexico with Club Tijuana in Liga MX. He made 195 appearances for the club.
The midfielder has 23 caps with the United States Men’s National Team, with 3 goals scored. Corona was on the 2013 and 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup winning teams.
Now what? Corona was picked by two Texas teams in the span of a week. If he does end up in Houston, look for him to play in the midfield and provide depth and experience to a team that badly needs it. If Corona decides to return to Mexico, or play in another league, the Dynamo will own his rights, if and when he returns to MLS. This pick is a bit of a headscratcher to say the least.
