Jersey Week: The terrible, horrible, no good, very bad luck Dynamo jersey

Come and take a trip with me as we flash back over four years. I was a young(er) warthog working my dream job in the sports industry, I was a Houston Dynamo employee who had finally been promoted. In honor of my promotion, I was given a customized Dynamo orange jersey the number 16 on the back, I was so incredibly excited.

Unfortunately months later I had to move on from this dream job, but on the bright side I was able to go to games as a fan instead of having to work them like I did previously.

The first Dynamo game I went to as a fan was April 15, 2016. Wearing my proud jersey, I went to the game ready to engulf myself in all the team was ready to offer. Game started out incredibly as the Dynamo scored immediately off a corner kick and I JUST KNEW that today would be a good day........well I was wrong. Galaxy wound up scoring soon after then scored three more to put the Dynamo away easily.

No worries, you win some you get blown out some, right? Well next time I decided to bring this troubling jersey to BBVA was August 27, 2016. The Dynamo were playing against that team from Frisco and I felt good about our chances. Sure enough, the men in orange scored first and I thought, “This is it! the team at the bottom of the table will defeat the team at the top, because we are in fact the good guys!” I was very wrong. FC Dallas would go on to score three more goals and once again give me a crushing defeat while wearing my 16 orange jersey.

Fast forward to 2017, new year new jersey luck, right? Well I brought the jersey to watch the Dynamo play Sporting Kansas City, June 23, 2017. This wasn’t even an MLS game, it was the US Open Cup Round of 16, surely this bad luck doesn’t transfer over to this. I was sorely mistaken. SKC scored after halftime to take the lead and then once again in garbage time to kick the Dynamo out of the USOC.

It still had not truly hit me that this jersey was bad luck however, that is until November 21, 2017. The Astros had just won the World Series and the Dynamo were in the Western Conference Finals. The atmoshpere was absolutely amazing, best atmosphere I’ve ever been apart of and for some dumb, idiotic reason, I decided to wear my orange 16 jersey. That game ended up as one of the biggest let downs in Houston Dynamo history. After 90 minutes of awful refereeing, sour defensive play, and bad jersey voodoo, the Dynamo lost 2-0 at home then eventually lost the round to the Seattle Sounders outright.

After the game, I sat in disbelief figuring out that my jersey was indeed bad luck. I recalled all these games that I wore this jersey to and all the misfortune it brought me. Before I decided to throw the jersey in the closet forever, I decided to look up the player who happened to dawn this trecherous jersey and sure enough it was none other than the man who has haunted me on the field as well, Kevin Garcia.
