Know Your Dash- Ella Masar

Forward Ella Masar brings an extensive background and amazing speed to the forward position for the Dash.

Ella Masar is a native of Illinois where she attended Urbana High school. She holds the school record for the most goals in a season at 40 as well as the most career goal with 92. In 2004 she was the Champaign News- Gazette Player of the Year.

She attended the University of Illinois from 2004 to 2007 and played as a forward for the women's soccer team. As a freshman she played in 24 games and had two starts. She got her first collegiate point during the season opener against Missouri with her first goals coming in back to back games against Southeast Missouri State and Evansville. Her second year with the team she played in all 22 games and got 10 starts. She broke the schools record for fastest goal into a half when she scored just 11 seconds into their game against Iowa.

Masar broke out her junior year scoring 9 goals and 9 assists leading the league in game winning goals and was fifth over all in points. She was the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. She was the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after she scored the game tying goal and then game winning goals in a come from behind victory over #9 Penn State on 10/2. That stand out game also put her on Soccer American's Team of the Week and Soccer Buzz's Elite Team of the Week.

Her senior year she was a tri-captain of the team starting all but one game she scored 12 goals and 3 assists. Continuing to come up big when her team needed her she tied as leader in the Big Ten for game winning goals at 7. Masar was named All-Big Ten first team and Lowe's All-America first team. She was the back to back player of the week after recording two goals against Indiana and following it up the next week by scoring three goals against Michigan and Michigan State. She ended her career at Illinois third for career points at 74 and was second place for the most game winning goals at 13.

While in college she played in the W-League for Windy City Bluez for a single game in 2004. The next year she played for the Chicago Gael. Staying with them for two seasons she played in 16 games and scored 10 goals. In 2007 she played 8 games for the Vancouver Whitecaps scoring a single goal and having 5 assists. She then spent 2008 playing for the Washington Freedom appearing in 7 games. She scored 3 goals which helped the team to finish first in the Northeast Division.

The WPS was created in 2008 and Masar made the jump from the W-League. She was drafted 9th overall by the Chicago Red Stars. She was injured part of the way through the 2009 season tearing four muscles in her hip. She returned to the Red Stars after her injury healed and ended up playing a total of 38 games for the team. She was a part of the 2011 magicJack team appearing in 16 games and scoring 4 goals.

In 2011 she made the move to France to play for Paris Saint-Germain. She made 17 appearances for the team and scored 6 goals. She returned to the U.S. in 2012 and re-join the Chicago Red Stars as they played in the WPSLE and then for the 2013 with the NWSL. During the 2013 season she played 20 games and scored 3 goals.

Taken as the Dash's fifth pick in the expansion draft Masar wreaks havoc on defenses due to her speed and explosiveness. She has had a strong professional career and will be able to provide a strong presence up top. A strong player she fights hard to win the ball and will be a great asset up top for the Dash.
