The Dynamo saw their lead created by a Giles Barnes wonder-goal erased by a stoppage time Chad Marshall goal.

Quick Thoughts:

1) The difference between the first half and the second half had to represent a shift in tactics. The Dynamo sat back to defend a 1-0 lead the entire second half and a lapse by the defense caused by a mounting Seattle attack led to the team dropping 2 needed points at home.

2) Joe Willis has continued to grow as a keeper and it showed. He looks much more like a leader now than he did when he first started this year and has commanded his defense much better over the last two games.

3) Despite the defensive lapse that led to the goal, the defense largely was up to the task of keeping the Sounders away from goal, but as we sat back more we allowed more opportunities for Seattle.

Houston Dynamo Player Ratings

Joe Willis, MotM, (7.5) - Willis, who started his 5th consecutive game filling in for the injured Tyler Deric, put in a MotM performance which included 5 big saves and punches late in the game. It was unfortunate to see the team concede a goal in stoppage time as Willis had played well enough to earn the clean sheet. On the goal, Willis pushed the ball somewhat awkwardly, which led to Raul Rodriguez's error and Chad Marshall's goal.

DaMarcus Beasley (6) - DMB made several crucial defensive plays all over the field and was even able to contribute on the offensive end with a few incredible runs at goal.

Raul Rodriguez (5) - While a lot of the attention on Rodriguez will be for his error leading to Seattle's equalizing goal, Rodriguez did show some of his usual standout traits from central defense such as his penchant for picking out passes and for distributing the ball well. Dynamo Theory writer Harrison Hamm did an excellent job of breaking down Rodriguez's part in Seattle's goal.

David Horst (6) - One thing I've talked about the Dynamo needing at defense is urgency to clear balls away from danger when the ball nears the 6 yard box. Horst in this game demonstrated plenty of urgency by clearing the ball successfully with his feet and in the air. Horst also blocked 2 shots including one shot that was inside the 6 yard box late in the match.

Jalil Anibaba (7) - This was Anibaba's best game as a Dynamo player. Anibaba's passing in previous matches has been lacking, but against the Sounders he found his form and passed with over 80% accuracy. Anibaba provided key defensive stops and was active on offense assisting to Giles Barnes and nearly finding the net himself.

Ricardo Clark (6) - It was exciting to see Clark take on Osvaldo Alonso and Clint Dempsey as Clark's tenacity matched the two's perfectly. Clark made a few poor challenges, but was able to connect very well with Andrew Wenger, Anibaba, and later Leonel Miranda on offense. Clark nearly found the net himself, but was just wide.

Alex Lima (5.5) - Alex, who has partnered in central midfield with Ricardo Clark, had a lackluster performance against the Sounders. He stood out defensively early, but slowly failed to impact the game significantly.

Giles Barnes (7) - Giles Barnes made his return to the starting lineup after missing out against the Red Bulls and the Whitecaps due to an injury picked up in the Dynamo's memorable 5-0 win over FC Dallas. Barnes scored the Dynamo's only goal which saw him take a pass from Anibaba (in which his back was initially to the ball) and place it in the back corner of the net. While Barnes passed the ball and was very active offensively, with many of his shots showed a bit of rust on them. Barnes's goal is up for the MLS Goal of the Week.

Christian Maidana (6) - Chaco had several key passes that led to opportunities for the Dynamo, but all of them came in the first half which was the story in this match. In the 2nd half Maidana sat back and hardly advanced the ball into the final 3rd of the field.

Andrew Wenger (6.5) - Wenger displayed his usual traits as a two-way player through his 5 tackles and his combination play with Maidana and later Oscar Boniek Garcia. Though Wenger failed to get a shot on goal, his work rate on both sides of the ball denied chances for Seattle and created them for Houston.

Will Bruin (5.5) - Despite being active in the first half of the match, Bruin had few touches in the 2nd half. Bruin showed plenty of desire to score, but the ball just wasn't going to him for half of the game. He passed well for a forward and had chances on goal, but never had a chance to find the back of the net simply due to a lack of service. Bruin did have one good chance in the 2nd half following a through ball by Miranda, but was called for offsides.

The Subs:

Oscar Boniek Garcia (6) - Boniek returned from his international duty with the Honduran National Team and came on for Cristian Maidana in the 67th minute in order to provide the squad with more life. Boniek immediately got an opportunity on goal, but apart from a few quick runs the team continued to look listless in its attack.

Leonel Miranda (6) - Entered the game for Andrew Wenger in the 75th minute, Miranda did well to advance the ball into the Sounders' territory.

David Rocha (N/A) - Came on for Giles Barnes in the 90th minute and made a decent defensive play to push the ball out of bounds off a Sounder player, but didn't play enough for a fair rating.

Coach Owen Coyle (4.5) - Maybe the conversation surrounding this game would be different had the Dynamo been able to hold on for the 1-0 win. Then again, maybe it wouldn't be too different. The difference between the first half and the second half was night and day as the team we saw in the first half looked determined, energetic, and found chances on goal. The team we saw in the second half were content to make Seattle chase the ball and sat back when the Sounders had possession. Sitting back on a 1-0 lead always begs opponents to step up their chances to secure a point. This team this year has looked transformed on offense, but is still giving up the same kinds of silly goals we saw last year.

Film Session: Marshall's last-second goal

We analyze the heartbreaking last-second goal from Seattle's Chad Marshall that robbed two points from the Houston Dynamo.

There was some good and some bad to take from the Houston Dynamo's draw with the Seattle Sounders on Sunday at BBVA Compass Stadium. The attack was promising (at least for part of the game) and the defense looked fairly solid, but the Dynamo gave away a couple points at the bitter end when Chad Marshall—one of the many Seattle players stationed around the box—scored a goal on the last kick of the game.

Fans are right to be angry—the Dynamo should never have given up a goal that late in the match. Here's why that goal happened and how it could have been prevented:

The play begins with yet another desperation cross sent in by Seattle:

Tyrone Mears's back-footed ball in marks the final attempt of the Sounders' push for a goal. The second this ball is cleared even just a few yards from the box, Ismail Elfath should blow his whistle, and the Dynamo surely know this. Anything will do.

It's a four-v-four aerial battle in the box. That obviously favors the offense.

The cross is a good one. It heads toward the top of the six-yard box, where Clint Dempsey is stationed, but David Horst is able to rise above and get good contact on a headed clearance. As long as the center-back is able to keep it out of the danger zone, his header will do the job. The Dynamo survive another day.

Oalex Anderson (39, circled in green) is positioned toward the left wing, ready to deal with the loose scraps. He is way too wide open.

Horst's clearance heads toward the corner, where Anderson chases after it. Leonel Miranda (circled in orange) is ready to defend him. The Dynamo's marking job is very poor right now, as three Sounders players are standing with a few feet in between them and a defender.

Again, literally anything apart from a corner will end this for Houston.

The Vincentian substitute reaches the ball and immediately skins Miranda one-on-one. The first instinct is to berate the Argentine for letting Anderson get by him so easily, but he should be given a pass here. The 20-year old is really creative on the dribble, and Miranda did well to keep the pressure on him.

More people in the box now for the Dynamo, but there needs to be more organization. Everyone should be marking one person, and they need to stick with them. After that, it's just a matter of adequately dealing with the next ball to come in.

The cross is a lower one from Anderson, and will land in that circled area. Horst isn't close enough to do much with it, so it's up to Joe Willis to decide whether to come for it or not.

It's crucial that the Dynamo defenders show discipline and stick with their man rather than instinctively charge the ball.

Willis makes the correct decision in going for it. The problem here is that he deflected it back towards the middle, rather than out of bounds or at least in that direction. Easier said than done, of course, but he could have done better.

Raul Rodriguez (black line pointing at him) will have the ball come right at him.

Rodriguez must not have expected the ball to come toward him, as he gets it caught in his feet and lets it slip through him in the direction of a wide-open Chad Marshall (circled in blue). Marshall can't be that open.

All it takes is a simple touch away from the Spanish defender. I understand it came at him fast and he didn't have time to clear it up the field, but he definitely could have done better.

Marshall finds the ball sitting in his lap and pokes it into the wide open goal to break the hearts of everyone in that stadium.

There are multiple issues at play here: The marking was sub-par, the ball shouldn't have been allowed to keep filtering in and out of the box, it should have been cleared earlier, and, of course, Rodriguez's error. Allowing these kinds of goals late in games can not happen, and in this league it will cost teams playoff spots. The Dynamo need to tighten up late in games.

Three things from the Dynamo's loss to Seattle

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

This has to be considered a disappointing result for the Dynamo.

In MLS, the formula for success is win at home and draw on the road. In some instances this doesn't hold true, but a lot of the time, the clubs who consistently achieve great things in this league follow this blueprint.

So when the Houston Dynamo only managed a 1-1 draw at home against the Seattle Sounders despite holding a 1-0 lead for almost an hour, it has to be considered a disappointment. But there are positives to take, and earning a point from a match with Seattle can never be that bad of a result.

Here are three other observations from that game:

1. The attack looked good—in the first half

I wrote about Andrew Wenger and how well he has done this season, and he continued his success against Seattle. Wenger, along with Cristian Maidana and other attackers, were constantly putting pressure on the opposing backline in the first half with crosses and incisive runs. The front five were active offensively and defensively, pressing high and winning second balls. They showed why the Dynamo have scored so many goals this season.

But in the second half—holding a 1-0 lead courtesy of a 35th-minute Giles Barnes goal—they went stagnant up front, sitting back and letting Seattle attack. The Dynamo produced basically nothing that really challenged the Sounders' backline:

That was Houston's passing chart in the final third from the second half. Disappointing, to say the least.

Completely unacceptable for the Dynamo to take their foot off the gas in the second half, must press the attack all game #HOUvSEA

— Orange In The Oven (@OrangeInTheOven) April 10, 2016

If they keep up the energy and attacking enthusiasm in the second half, it's three points.

2. The backline got it together

There were plenty of questions about the backline entering this matchup—and they were well-founded, considering the amount of dysfunction at the back—but the quartet of Jalil Anibaba, David Horst, Raul Rodriguez and DaMarcus Beasley did well to shut down a potent Sounders offense. The full-backs joined the attack often and never were caught up the field, while the defensive midfield pairing of Alex and Ricardo Clark did well to cover the area in front of the defense.

Granted, Seattle never really made many splitting runs and were often idle up front, until, of course, later in the game when Houston parked the bus. Before that, though, Seattle struggled to find much in the final third. That's a credit to the backline.

3. Emergency defense

I've preached this before, and I probably will again, but emergency defense is too often overlooked as an important part of the game. When teams are defending for their lives in the final seconds of a match—as the Dynamo were on Sunday—they have to make sure to do as well as they can to cover all their gaps and get the ball clear, because the longer the ball pings around the box, the more chance a goal is scored. Points can be lost when clubs let one player run free or there's a poor clearance. Houston learned that lesson in a painful way against Seattle.

There was nothing about this Chad Marshall goal that signified deeper issues. I'll explain more in my Film Session piece, but the reason this goal happened was bad last-ditch defending. The Dynamo can't allow these type of goals late in games.

"It sucks" Dynamo players frustrated after conceding equalizer in last second to Seattle Sounders

Defensive miscue on the last play of the match once again doom the Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium

After the Dynamo's 1-1 draw against the visiting Seattle Sounders, forward Will Bruin summed up the mood of the players and staff in just two words.

"It sucks."

For the second time in three home matches this season, the Dynamo conceded the equalizer on the last play of the match. Sounders forward Oalex Anderson, in a last second chance, sent a low cross down the goal-line that bounced off Dynamo defender Raul Rodriguez's foot – right to a waiting Chad Marshall, who pounced on the ball for the game-tying goal.

For me, you can't keep saying its bad luck if it always happens.-DaMarcus Beasley

The Dynamo again failed to bring home three points at BBVA Compass Stadium. In their home opener, the Dynamo conceded the equalizer in the last second to the New England Revolution.

"It's tough to swallow," said Dynamo defender DeMarcus Beasley. "For me, you can't keep saying its bad luck if it always happens. Something's not right with us – if it's the mentality of our team or whatever. But we have to make this thing right, because we can't keep going out like this."

The Dynamo did show some grit against one of the better possession-oriented teams in the league. The Orange took the game to the Sounders in the first half. Some key stops by Sounders keeper Stefan Frei kept the game level for the first 30 minutes.

In the 35 minute, Giles Barnes – who made his return to the lineup from a hamstring injury – chipped a shot in over Frei to give the Dynamo the lead.

Although Seattle was won the possession battle on Sunday, they were restricted to taking shots from outside the box – rarely troubling Dynamo keeper Joe Willis. The Sounders switched to more attacking formation late in the game, forcing Dynamo head coach Owen Coyle to sub out Barnes for David Rocha.

Still, Marshall's stoppage time equalizer sealed the Dynamo's fate.

Aside from the home opener, the Dynamo also had a 3-2 lead at Red Bull Arena, before allowing two goals in the final 15 minutes to the New York Red Bulls. There's a silver-lining to Sunday's heartbreak; the Dynamo have to quickly forget the Sounders and focus on their next game five days later against the Los Angeles Galaxy.

"The good thing about it is we got a quick turnaround," Beasley said. "A quick turnaround on Friday, another game at home. We're playing with the big boys – LA. If you can't get up for that game, then you shouldn't be playing football."

Dynamo give up last second goal to tie Sounders

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Once again the Dynamo gave up a late goal to end the match 1-1 against the Seattle Sounders.

The Dynamo put together a strong first half match against the Seattle Sounders, but it gave way to a complaisant second half that saw three points turn into one in the dying moments of the match.

The Sounders didn't have many chances in the first half as the Dynamo controlled the ball especially in the midfield. Houston had multiple chances in front of the net during the first half, however, Frei was there to stop (almost) all of them.

The Sounders had few chances in the first half most coming from corner kicks or free kicks. The best chance at goal for the Sounders in the first half was thanks to a free kick after Ricardo Clark fouled Ivanschitz. Clint Dempsey took the kick in the 33rd minute and just missed the net wide.

Houston on the other hand had numerous chances in front of the net. After all of his effort and attempts to scored in the first 35 minutes of the game it wasn't until he wasn't trying that Giles Barnes scored for the Dynamo. Barnes turned just in time to see the ball and took a kick at it sending it towards the net. Frei had no shot at the high ball as Houston went up 1-0 over the Sounders.

The Sounders looked more dangerous in the second half, but the game soon fell into a lull as Houston seemed to be barely awake. After subs on each side, Boniek Garcia almost scored right after getting on the field. Andrew Wenger did a great job to set Boniek up in the box but once against Frei was there to stop the ball.

Thing got dangerous for Houston once Herculez Gomez came on as a late sub. He proved to be an immediate spark for Seattle, but Willis was able to hold off the surging Sounders. Beasley gave up a free kick after being called for taking down Gomez but the Dynamo defense easily headed out the free kick attempt. With three minutes of stoppage time the Sounders kept pushing for a late equalizer and eventually they got it.

In the last seconds of the game Chad Marshall, with Dynamo defenders all around him, ended up with the ball at his feet. Not hesitating Marshall hit the ball right past Raul Rodriquez to score the equalizer.

Final score Dynamo 1, Sounders 1.

In a matter of seconds three points turned into one as Houston was once again unable to close out the game. While the Dynamo offense is looking good this season it is the defense that continues to be a problem particularly late in game.

Previewing Houston v Seattle with Sounder at Heart

We spoke with Dave Clark at Sounder at Heart to talk about Seattle’s early season struggles and how they’ll respond in Houston

The Houston Dynamo are ready to respond to a disappointing road loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps that was decided by a soft penalty kick call. Despite the penalty call being the difference in the 1-0 defeat, the Dynamo offense lacked potency. The team now faces the Seattle Sounders, who are currently the bottom team in the Western Conference, at home in Houston after a bye week which allowed players to return from injury.

In our preview of the match we discussed if our defense was ready to step up to Clint Dempsey and a Sounder offense looking to find its form, but we wanted to learn more about what's going on with the Sounders so we spoke with Dave Clark at Sounder at Heart to understand what's going on with the club in Seattle.

Dynamo Theory: The Seattle Sounders finished their 2015 MLS campaign in 4th place (just a few points shy of 2nd) and ended up falling to FC Dallas in the Conference Semifinals in the playoffs. What are the expectations this year for the Sounders and what would be considered a failed season?

Sounder at Heart: The answer to this one varies wildly. There are people who will consider another appearance in the playoffs success. Others insist the club has to get the MLS Cup, or at least a Shield or Open Cup. I've even written that Sigi should be gone if he doesn't win the MLS Cup, despite that I think it isn't because the 2016 season would be a failure, but due to the long-term success curve of the club. Lastly, there's the opinion that this season is a rebuild rather than a reload.

Those people feel that the talent added during the two transfer windows is more important than the results of the regular season. They see a team with eight regulars that will be 30 or over starting the 2017 season. With an open DP slot and enough TAM/GAM to add a second significant piece the two new additions will be about a continuing need to extend the trophy window. When the org had core that ended 2015 the window was probably going to close at the end of this year. Now without Oba that window might be closed right now.

It's about what Morris, Roldan, Kovar and Anderson can do as they step into major roles and what gets added. This is the most complex season for Sounders FC since 2009.

DT: The Sounders currently sit in last place of the Western Conference and have only finished 3 goals in 4 games. Why is Seattle struggling early out of the gates?

SaH: Every loss has a reason. They're each valid. All of the reasons suck and there isn't anything that can be done about it. Oniel Fisher took an early red card for the type of challenges we're seeing called more often this year. Then Stefan Frei flubbed a routine save on a shot from distance. So rather than scrape out a 0-0 draw while down a man for 75+ minutes match one was a loss. In the next game injury subs. In match two the Sounders had to use an 18' minute sub when Friberg went down. Despite that they were up a goal... and then lost 2-1 at home anyway. Match three saw Vancouver dive once and flop another time. Two penalties against was the only offense the Whitecaps could muster. It was another 2-1 loss.

All teams have crappy luck throughout the season. Crappy luck three games in a row to start the season after losing an MVP candidate shined a big, bright light on the issues with the offense. Seattle doesn't "deserve" to be at the bottom of the table. But they also don't look good.

DT: Following Obafemi Martin's departure, the Sounders' offense seems to be searching for the right way to connect the pieces in order to run optimally. How can Sigi Schmid tinker a way to get this Sounder offense to start producing?

SaH: Once upon a time Jordan Morris was going to be a rotational player trying to learn the pro game. Now, in the post-Oba Sounders Jordan Morris has to be the man, at least until they add another top end talent. Nelson Haedo Valdez and Andreas Ivanschitz can help. Both joined during the Summer transfer window last year (as did Eric Friberg and Roman Torres, both injured). Together that offense should be able to do things. It has yet to perform.

Last match, and probably in this one too, Sigi shifted the parts around in order to try and increase service to Clint Dempsey. That's the other part of the answer. Where Oba needs to be replaced by the group, Clint needs to be an MVP candidate. That means a lot of touches within 25 yards of goal, mostly central. He "should" be scoring more goals. It's not happening yet.

There's a lot not happening yet. At this time the Sounders are an average MLS side. They can win games; they can lose games; they won't look dominant ever.

Projected Lineup: Frei; Joevin Jones, Marshall, Evans, Mears; Alonso, Roldan; Dempsey; Ivanschitz, Morris, Kovar

Three keys for the Dynamo against Seattle

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Keeping Clint Dempsey in check is crucial to the Dynamo's success against the Sounders, as well as two other important things.

The myriad struggles of the Houston Dynamo's embattled backline early this season have been well-documented, but when the Dynamo travel back to BBVA Compass Stadium to play against the Seattle Sounders—a team with multiple difficulties of their own—they will have an opportunity to correct the defense's misgivings. After a well-timed bye week, they should be expected to improve upon dismal performances in many areas of the game.

The Sounders were unexpectedly the last team in MLS to earn a point this season, but they did it in style, beating the Montreal Impact at home on a late Clint Dempsey goal. They have yet to solve all their attacking issues, however, so this is an opportunity for the Dynamo to shut down a talented goal-scoring side still figuring themselves out, similar to what they did to FC Dallas a month ago.

Don't expect a 5-0 win, though. It's always a tough game against Seattle, but Houston should still be hopeful. Here's how they can pull off three points in front of a national television audience:

1. Control Clint

After experiencing some attacking setbacks in their new 4-3-3 early in the season, the Sounders pulled Clint Dempsey back into the midfield from his previous wide role and basically allowed him to go wherever he pleased. They were then able to move natural wide player Andreas Ivanschitz to the wing, theoretically releasing the Austrian to spread the field and send balls into the box. That hasn't worked just yet, but Dempsey playing in the middle has.

Teams always want to get their best player the ball as often as they can, and with Dempsey playing as their de facto number-ten, the Sounders accomplish this. Although the US-international is not a number-ten by any stretch of the word—he's at his best when playing as a second forward—he is allowed to move to all sorts of different places on the field when played as an attacking midfielder. The Sounders get more playmaking from the middle and get to play Ivanschitz in his natural position, making this tactical adjustment from Sigi Schmid a smart one.

The Dynamo, if Seattle line up like this on Sunday, will have to stop Dempsey from creating dangerous chances in the middle. While he played somewhat higher up the field last week, he still wrecked havoc in different areas, necessitating the Impact to dedicate one person on him at all times. Houston can keep him from doing too much damage by marking him out of the game.

That doesn't mean take a person out of the attack, but it's imperative that someone's on Dempsey consistently. That's hard to do, though:

He's everywhere. But Houston have to keep him out of dangerous areas as much as they possibly can, or they will continue to give up too many goals.

2. Defend the counter

Cristian Maidana should be back to full strength against Seattle after playing just over an hour in Vancouver. That's obviously great for the attack, but there is one adjustment the Dynamo have to make with him returning: How they defend the counter.

Maidana has a tendency to drift out wide and attempt to create from there. It has worked:

When he does this, it takes one central midfielder out of the middle, giving the Sounders more room to get on the counter-attack. Houston have to be wary of this.

Ricardo Clark usually is deeper in central midfield, but when he makes his late top-of-the-box runs, he is drawn out of the play as well, meaning the center-back pairing of Raul Rodriguez and David Horst have to be on high alert.

3. Finish chances

Two weeks ago, one of the main reasons the Dynamo lost was missed chances. They failed to score a goal despite 17 shots—five of which were on target—and saw a questionable penalty kick decide the outcome. In any game, this is crucial, but after what Houston did in the first three games of the year, finishing is a strength that should be built on.

The Orange's backline is still finding its footing and the Sounders attack is due for some goals, so the Dynamo have to take what they are given and put some shots past Stefan Frei.

They can't have another shot chart like this ...

... and not score a single goal.
