It was high marks all around as the Houston Dynamo were able to take down visiting Atlanta United 4-0.

In their opening game of the 2018 MLS season, the Houston Dynamo looked dominant from back to front as the club took down Atlanta United FC 4-0. The Dynamo came out aggressive early and never let up. From time to time Houston opted to extend their time of possession if there weren’t any openings to exploit as they were keen to let Atlanta chase the game rather than sit back on their lead. From a style of play perspective, this team did what it’s good at. Counter attacking quickly and making the best of set piece opportunities.

The player ratings averaged out pretty fairly for everyone. The team played well so it was high marks all around.

The Top Performers:

Alberth Elis, Man of the Match, (9.2) – Alberth Elis was a handful for Atlanta United and that’s putting it mildly. His ability to turn on the jets surprised defenders (see the game’s opening goal for a perfect example) which forced turnovers and hasty clearances. Although Elis himself didn’t end up on the score sheet, he is currently tied at the top as the assist leader in MLS. His first assist was to Andrew Wenger which was a perfect ball across the mouth of goal for Wenger to tap in. His second was a ball he played again to Wenger who was able to get the ball to Mauro Manotas to slot in. Elis was a standout in this one even with just about everyone else playing at the top of their game. There’s a reason he was on the MLS Team of the Week.

Philippe Senderos (8.7) – The other player on the MLS Team of the Week is Senderos. Some weren’t sure that Senderos would start over Leonardo who was Adolfo Machado’s primary center back partner in 2017. Senderos scored a spectacular headed goal in the 23rd minute. A short corner (ugh) that saw Oscar Boniek García and Eric Alexander exchange passes, Boniek whipped in a cross which found its target in Senderos who smashed the ball into the net. Defensively, Senderos had 3 tackles and a blocked shot and his passing was on point. Sometimes Senderos gets a little too creative with his passing out of the back, but this time his passes generally found their target.

Andrew Wenger (8.5) – Wenger should see increased playing time this season with Mauro Manotas not eating into his minutes on the wing. This is great because Wenger plays both sides of the ball very well. Against Atlanta he was active at getting back and helping with defensive duties and he was good at getting behind the defense with his runs. It was his runs in particular that made him so effective. His trailing run on the opening goal saw him slowly get behind his defender and then accelerate to put the ball in the net. His assist to Manotas also showed a clever run as he got, once again, behind his defender and got enough on the ball to set up Manotas.

Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera (8.7) – Hard to complain about Wilmer Cabrera’s game plan. The team took control and punished Atlanta nearly every chance they got. The defense looked a lot more composed and only looked out of sorts a handful of times which Atlanta was unable to capitalize on. The team was playing without Tomás Martínez and Juan David Cabezas’s day would end prematurely just 15th minutes in, but players stepped up - Darwin Cerén in particular. The team will need to build up play better against clubs that sit back more, but we’ll have to see how Martínez can address that concern down the line. Against Atlanta, the game plan worked and it maximized Houston’s strengths to their fullest.

Players and coach Wilmer Cabrera’s thought on the win over Atlanta and quick hits of results from around the league.

Last season’s Western Conference finalist Houston Dynamo continued their mastery at BBVA Compass Stadium with a 4-0 season opening win over visiting Atlanta United. The four goal outburst in the 2018 opener improved Houston’s home mark to 6-0-1 since defeating DC United in the first ever match on April 12, 2012.

“We’re here to work. We’re here to talk on the field,” said Cabrera. “That is where we need to talk, and today was a good day. It’s only one game out of 34 and we have 33 in front of us. This is a long season. It’s going to be difficult. It is going to be complicated. All of the teams are getting stronger and better, so that is why we wanted to get stronger and better in the little details to be sure that we compete at the same level.”

Entering Saturday afternoon’s match, the question loomed as to how this year’s team would respond to playing with a target on their back. After all, this 2018 roster with its nucleus returning would not be sneaking up on anyone after scoring 57 goals last season. Head coach Wilmer Cabrera could not have asked for a better start for his team that netted a record setting 43 home goals a season ago. Thirty of the teams 57 goals last season came in the first 45 minutes of play and Houston’s proclivity for scoring early and often continued in 2018.

Andrew Wenger put away the game’s first marker in the fifth minute of play after forward Alberth Elis overpowered González Pírez out wide drawing Atlanta keeper Brad Guzan away from the goal line setting up Wenger for the easy tap in.

Less than twenty minutes later, defender Philippe Senderos would soar over the Atlanta defense to head home another marker. Not since Texas native and former Dynamo star Bobby Boswell departed has the Houston side had a defender who could get up in the box like Senderos. Coincidentally or not, the Swede’s first goal in nearly four years (March 13, 2014) came against his former Aston Villa teammate and United keeper Brad Guzan, also a header.

“It was a corner. We rehearsed corners – we know that we are dangerous and it was another opportunity to put pressure on them and we did that,” explained Senderos on his first MLS goal. “The delivery was good and I was able to get away from the defender and I put my head in there. It was a very important moment to put the second one straight after the first one when we are leading in the first half. We are very happy to have started well at home, the support was brilliant, and we are really excited for the next step.”

Four minutes later, Mauro Manotas gave the Dynamo a three goal advantage with his first tally of 2018.

In first half stoppage time, Darwin Ceren in his Dynamo debut made it 4-0 just seconds before the halftime whistle.

Dynamo keeper Chris Seitz posted his first clean sheet in Houston debut including a penalty kick stop in the 49th minute against Miguel Almiron.

“I had a feeling of him going there,” said Seitz about the stop. “We do a lot of work on that stuff. I tried to get there early and make him push it wide. At that point, when you get there and he sees you going in that direction, you put doubt in his mind. I did everything I could; luckily we kept it out.”

In other MLS action

FC Dallas 1 RSL 1 - Marcelo Silva got the equalizer in the 86’ salvaging a point in FCD’s home opener.

San Jose 3 Minnesota 2 - Despite a late brace from Minnesota’s Kevin Molino (81’, 85’), it was San Jose’s Danny Hoesen’s brace that (51’, 59’) and Valeri Qazaishvili opening goal (28’) that proved to be too much.

Columbus 2 TFC 0 - Fernando Higuain and Gyasi Zardes scored minutes apart ahead of the halftime whistle as the visiting Crew upset TFC to start the 2018 campaign.

Philadelphia 2 Rev 0 - Goals by Anthony Fontana and C.J. Sapong led Philadelphia to 2018 home opening win.

Orlando 1 DCU 1 - Stefan Pinhon (90’+3) goal with seconds to spare in second half stoppage time spoiled an up bid by visiting DC United. Tamil Asad tallied for DCH in 32’.

Seattle 0 LAFC 1 - Diego Rossi’s goal in the 11th minute stood up as LAFC posted 1-0 win over the 2016 MLS Cup champion.

Vancouver 2 Montreal 1 - Goals by Kei Kamara (63’) in his Whitecaps debut and Aphonso Davies (70’) staved off a late rally Montreal. Matteo Mancouso (81’) had the lone tally for the Impact.

Sporting KC 0 NYC FC 2 - Goals by Maximilliano Morales and Jesus Morales powered NYC FC to an opening road win in 2018.

LA Galaxy 2 Portland 1 - First half goals by Ola Kamara and Romain Alessandrini carried the Galaxy to a win in their season opener with Portland. Timbers midfielder Sebastian Blanco scored in the 66’.

Houston Dynamo 4, Atlanta United FC 0: Rate the Players and Quick Thoughts

Some quick thoughts on the game and then rate the player performances in the Dynamo’s 4-0 win over Atlanta United

The Houston Dynamo opened their 2018 season in style with a 4-0 win over Atlanta United FC who is projected to do pretty well this season. Front to back it’s hard to grade any player harshly as the club put on one of their most dominant performances in a home opener.

Quick Thoughts about the Game:

1) The team came out very well and executed their game plan. The team was aggressive, but knew when to control the tempo – especially after the Dynamo had the lead. There are a few things the team needs to work on such as finding ways to build up play and attack teams that sit deep, but my biggest criticism is when the team sits back on a lead and allows opponents back in games. That did not happen against Atlanta. In fact, it appeared as if the Dynamo sniffed blood in the water and everyone wanted to go out and get a goal. This kind of strategy won’t win every time, and the Dynamo could have given up a goal or two if Atlanta hadn’t whiffed on their opportunities, but it’ll win a lot of games if they stick to this style of play.

2) The obvious place to start in a game that has four goals is with the forwards. The top three all worked well together, pressured Atlanta, and were dangerous with the ball. Andrew Wenger worked hard on the defensive side to block shots and win the ball back, but his runs made him especially dangerous. He was in the perfect place at the perfect time to open up the scoring at BBVA Compass Stadium and he set up Mauro Manotas’s goal with a perfect run behind his defender. Just before he was tackled he was able to just get a touch on the ball for Manotas to finish.

Speaking of Manotas, he’s embraced the role of a center forward along with the style of play Wilmer Cabrera wants to run. He’s ready to spring the counter attack, and even though he didn’t score on those opportunities, he did earn corner kicks. He’s also grown as a hold up player which he’ll need to continue to develop in order to give his teammates time to get involved and make runs.

Then there was Alberth Elis. Elis looked every bit the speedy Dynamo that he was last year and more. He terrorized Atlanta’s back line who sometimes weren’t even aware he was coming behind them to get the ball (take a look at the opening goal for that). His dribbling was also on display as he had step-overs and even more step-overs. Sometimes he feigns like he’s going to pass it off, only for him to cut and take off. Defenders really don’t know how to deal with him and usually his weakness is that he pushes the ball too far in front of him. Even though Elis didn’t get on the score sheet, his impact was arguably the most important of any player on the field.

3) There were lots of other standout players in this one. Darwin Cerén entered the game for Juan David Cabezas and was able to not only score, but pass well. The injury to Cabezas could have been a turning point, but Cerén helped keep the midfield stabilized. Kevin Garcia also surprised me with his performance. The right back spot was routinely exploited by Seattle in the Western Conference Finals, and the Dynamo didn’t make any offseason signings to shore up the spot, but Kevin Garcia showed up against Atlanta. He was active at pushing up the field and passing well while providing plenty of cover defensively. Philippe Senderos also had a strong game as he scored on a set piece, but also directed the back well with Adolfo Machado.

4) The defense for the Dynamo last season was not outstanding. It worked well when it needed to, but the system was not set up to support the back as much as the front. Against Atlanta United, we saw the defense on full display. The shape was perfect with Senderos, Machado, DaMarcus Beasley, and Kevin Garcia all covering for each other and communicating well. There were only a handful of times that Atlanta got a quality chance and that was due to quality marking. Atlanta fired off 13 shots, the same number as the Dynamo, except only 2 of their shots were on target. That’s the defense making things difficult for a very talented offensive team.

5) I think my favorite part of this game was simply how comfortable everyone looked. Nothing looked forced on either side of the ball. The offense was quick when it needed to be and patient to move the ball back to the defenders to let Atlanta chase the ball. There were a few nervous moments like Chris Seitz drawing a penalty, but he made up for it by getting a save. This was a great way to start the season and maybe show the league that they – as usual, underestimated what this team is capable of.

Wenger, Senderos, Manotas and Ceren all score in the Dynamos opening day win.

MLS is finally back! After what felt like forever the league returned to action this weekend. The Dynamo kicked the season off in a big way in front of 20,377 fans on Saturday as they hosted (and defeated) Atlanta United. While many ‘experts’ have picked Atlanta to rule the league this season they looked more like losers as they fell 4-0 to the dominate Dynamo.

The Dynamo got on the scoreboard just a few minutes into the game thanks in large part to the speed on Alberth Elis. The speedy forward got past Leandro Gonzalez Pirez and crossed the ball into the box where Andrew Wenger was waiting in front of goal. Wenger easily tapped the ball in as goal keeper Brad Guzan had gone to the ground trying to stop the in-ball from Elis. The goal put Houston up 1-0 in the 5th minute of the game.

Mauro Manotas created a turnover a few minutes later getting ahead of his defender. The forward went 1v1 against Guzan as he dribbled into the box but the goalkeeper was able to stop the shot. In fact, the goalkeeper would largely be the reason why the Dynamo didn’t end the game with 9 or 10 goals as he did his best to keep his squad in the game.

Ten minutes later it was Manotas again with another shot but Guzan parried it away. Out for a corner kick, Boniek Garcia took a short corner which he played to Eric Alexander who played it back to Boniek. Who then crossed the ball into the box where the cross found its way to the head of Philippe Senderos who redirected it to goal to put Houston up 2-0 in the 24th minute.

Three minutes later Mauro Manotas pounced on a loose ball to put it in the back of the net and make it 3-0. After a pass to Wenger, the Atlanta defender on him broke up the play with a sliding tackle that popped the ball loose. The good news ended there for Atlanta as Manotas saw the loose ball and hit a shot towards the net. The ball went past Guzan, who had come out of goal for the play on Wenger, as he fell backwards leaving no one to stop the shot.

In the the fifth minute of first half stoppage time Guzan got a hand on a free kick from Boniek Garcia. Unfortunately for the goal keeper he sent the ball back into traffic which allowed Darwin Ceren to score. Ceren was outside of the fray of players but saw what was taking shape in front of him as he ran in to strike the ball. With Guzan not in position to stop the ball and the other Atlanta players unable to make a stop Ceren (even the Atlanta player putting a hand up to try and stop it?!) scored his first goal for the Dynamo to put the team up 4-0.

The Dynamo had a scary start to the second half as Chris Seitz gave up a penalty after he made a sliding tackle on Josef Martinez bringing him down in the box. Miguel Almiron took the penalty kick for Atlanta but Seitz guessed the right way and got a finger time on the shot pushing the ball out and off the post.

As the second half worn on it lacked the fired power of the first half as neither team would score. Houston only got off three shots in the second half to bring their game total to 13 and four goals in the first half. Atlanta would finish the game with 13 as well but no goals. They won the possession battle with nearly 10% more possession than the men in orange. As was true many times for the Dynamo last season they won a game where they failed to dominate possession of the ball.

It was a great, and encouraging, start to the season for the Dynamo but at just one game in can they sustain it for the whole season? Next week, the Dynamo will host the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday.

It’s the start of the 2018 season! The Dynamo host Atlanta United to kick off the season. During the off-season the Dynamo saw a number of their well known players depart while they brought in young talent to replace them. Atlanta spent the off-season working on adding to their depth chart. The Dynamo had a solid pre-season but came up a little short in the Mobile Mini Sun Cup in Arizona losing on penalty kicks in overtime of the Championship game. Now fans have the chance to see them back in Houston as the season gets underway.

Previewing Houston Dynamo vs. Atlanta United FC with Dirty South Soccer

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

We spoke with Haris Kruskic at Dirty South Soccer to discuss the season opener between the Houston Dynamo and Atlanta United FC

Today is the day. Major League Soccer is finally back and the Houston Dynamo are back in action as they’re up against Atlanta United FC to start the season off. Last year the Dynamo made it to the Western Conference Finals and while many seem to have written the Dynamo off to replicate that success, the club will want to start things strong against a pretty tough opponent in Atlanta United.

In our preview of the match we discussed some lineup possibilities and ways the Dynamo can break down Atlanta, but we wanted an inside perspective on our opponents so we spoke with Haris Kruskic at Dirty South Soccer to get some insight about his club.

Dynamo Theory: Finishing 4th overall last season, but crashing out in the knockout round of the MLS Cup playoffs, what offseason moves did Atlanta make to push them to the next level?

Dirty South Soccer: The biggest issue Atlanta had last season was depth. Our starting XI was great, but due to our condensed schedule during the second half of the campaign, we struggled keeping the same lineup fresh and injury-free and that showed as the team finished winless in their last five matches of the season.

With the additions of Ezequiel Barco, Darlington Nagbe, and the emergence of younger players like Andrew Carleton, Brandon Vazquez, and Romario Williams who are expected to see more playing time than last season, that problem seems to have been relieved a good amount. It’s still not perfect, but it’ll do for now.

DT: What are realistic expectations about how far Atlanta United FC can go in their sophomore year in MLS?

DSS: Well, a couple different superbooks in Las Vegas give us the second best odds to win the Cup. Honestly, I really don’t think that’s out of the question. Toronto should still be the favorite and the Eastern Conference looks really good this year with NYCFC, the Red Bulls, and Orlando all making quality changes to their squad over the offseason.

Considering the amount of money Atlanta spent on transfers (a reported $15 million on Barco and $1.5 million on Nagbe), I would say anything short of a trip to the conference finals would be a disappointment. However, if Atlanta can stay healthy and add one or two more quality depth players, I like our odds to make a run for the Cup.

DT: For someone that hasn’t watched of Atlanta United this preseason, how would you describe their style of play and who are some names to look for during the game?

DSS: Atlanta is one of, if not the most attack-minded club in MLS. Fullbacks Franco Escobar and Greg Garza bomb upfield and overlap wingers Barco and Tito Villalba often. When they do so, holding mid Jeff Larentowicz drops back and creates a three-man backline with Michael Parkhurst and Leandro Gonzalez Pirez to create a bit of a 3-4-3/3-5-2 formation. They’re very possession oriented and use their pace to create opportunities.

If there is one weakness that Houston can exploit, it’s catching Atlanta on the counter. Since AU does get so high upfield, they eventually lose possession and teams take advantage of our fullbacks being out of position.

Everyone is talking about Barco. So much is expected from the most expensive player in MLS history, as it should be. He showed flashes of brilliance during the preseason. Atlanta’s just hoping the 18-year-old can consistently put in quality showings. Also, look out for Carleton. The U.S. U17 player may just make his second ever MLS appearance. If so, both will have oddly enough come against the Dynamo.

Projected Lineup: (4-3-3)

Guzan, Garza, Parkhurst, Pirez, Escobar, Larentowicz, Nagbe, Almiron, Gressel, Villalba, Martinez

For my answers to Haris’s excellent questions, please check them out at Dirty South Soccer!

As the Houston Dynamo enter their 12th season in Houston, BBVA Compass Stadium rolled out its red carpet of customer service plan on Tuesday afternoon just days ahead of Saturday’s Dynamo season opener.

Hosted by Juan Rodriguez, Executive Vice-President and General Manager of BBVA, Cyndi Levitt of Levy Restaurant, and chef Antanacio “Nacho” Zamora, the event highlighted the work put in since the end of the 2017 to better improve customer service, food, and the overall fan experience.

Rodriguez, on the job for nearly a year said the improvements are designed to allow the fan to get in and out as quickly as possible so that they can do what they came to do.

“Our efforts are to be reflective of our community and of our city,” began Rodriguez. “We have concentrated on improving the fan experience. We want our fans to know we hear them and are providing what they want. They want food that tastes great, service that is quick and not have to stand in long lines.”

With nearly a million dollars in renovations, the stadium experience will provide an opportunity for the fans to walk up to their specialty stand, get their food and/or drink and get back to watching the game. The renovations are focused on fans of all ages and ethnicities.

Diesel’s Corner is the newest family friendly innovation at BBVA catering to the youngest fans of the greatest game on grass. An interactive section for kids and their parents which will include hopscotch, chalkboards and face painting. There will also be food available as well as at prices that won’t break the bank.

A beer garden (biergarten) or El Parque complete with beer troughs, hammock seating and monitors to watch gives fans a place to mingle pre-game or in-game.

Craft beers according to Rodriguez are becoming a bigger and bigger part of the Houston community and as a result fans will have least eight different locally crafted beers to choose from on the concourse. Near the Methodist Gate will be La Copa, a frozen drink wall catering to the tastes of older fans who like their liquid libations with a little bit of brain freeze.

The food fare stands are designed with one signature item in mind. For example continues Rodriguez, “if you want pizza, head over to Pie (Section 107) or East End Oven (Section 125), grab your item and go to the register. No waiting in long lines.”

In addition to pizza, there is a Taqueria (Section 134) and Zamora Tacos (Section 115) which will offer the Grilled Skirt Steak Taco. Made with tender skirt steak dressed in a cilantro onion relish, homemade salsa and fresh lime, the street taco is wrapped in a warm corn tortilla and is sure to get the taste buds popping.

With 11 different players on the Dynamo representing Central and South America, the Hispanic trend continues with Nacho of the Game consisting of corn tortilla chips, homemade cheese sauce, Achiote rubbed pork al pastor, spicy chimichurri, pineapple salsa and fresh jalapenos.

At Diggity Dawgs Too (Section 116), fans can have the Columbian foot long dog or the ever popular two-foot-long size bathed in an irresistible sweet and creamy coleslaw, pineapple crema and topped with crumbles sea salt potato chips.

Want some BBQ, head on over the TX Q (Section 111) and Houston Q (Section 121) for either the Tex-Mex Smoked Brisket or the pulled pork torta with mango peach BBQ sauce, jalapeño coleslaw, and Oaxaca cheese.

More traditional stadium fare can be found at the Goal Post Grill (Section 128), the Pitch Pub (Section 140), and the H-Town Grill (Section 138) where fans can feast on the Texas Char-grilled Chicken Sandwich, Fish and Chips, or the all-new Dynamo Double Burger.

Alongside each fixed stand, fans will find a separate stand where they can purchase drinks without having to stand in the food line allowing them to get back to enjoying the game quicker. Along that same vein, fans will love The Market located near the northwest corner where they can go to grab beer, wine, and ice cream half-pints.

“Everything is about addressing quickness of service so that the fans can get what they want and get back to their seats to enjoy the game,” concluded Rodriguez.
