Houston Dynamo have little trouble defeating the Colorado Rapids on the road

Two own goals from the Rapids helped to push Houston to a 4-1 victory over the home team.

This Saturday Houston were on the road to play the Rapids for their only game in Colorado this season. Houston were hoping to continue riding a wave of scoring success from Memo Rodriguez while the Rapids were just hoping to get their first win of the season. It was the Memo-hype train that won the battle.

The Dynamo took an early lead thanks to Alberth Elis - Rodriguez connection. Rodriguez received the ball at midfield before turning to make a run down field towards goal. He passed the ball to a running Elis and once Rodriguez made his way into the box Elis pass the ball forward to him. Memo only needed one shot to put the ball past goal keeper Tim Howard only four minutes into the game.

Minutes later the Dynamo doubled their lead thanks to some help from the Rapids. It looked like Mauro Manotas had put away a ball from Elis but instead it was ruled an own goal as defender Axel Sjoberg was ruled to have gotten a foot on the ball first. By the fifteen minute the Dynamo had a 2-0 lead.

In the 34th minute the Rapids once again helped to extend the Dynamo lead. This time it was Keegan Rosenberry who put in a cross from Elis. The goal made 3-0 in the Dynamo’s favor before the half time whistle even blew.

When it did blow the stats showed that the Rapids dominated in possession and got of eight shots to Houston’s three. Houston was able to find space on the wings and use it to their advantage when they did get the ball, or at least when Elis got the ball as he had three assists in the first half alone.

While it took longer for them to find a goal in the second half than it did in the first the Dynamo found the net against in the second half. After getting three assists in the first half Elis finally got a goal of his own in the 67th minute of the game. Mauro Manotas was the man who got him the ball as Elis ran into the box after a big effort from Tomas Martinez to keep the ball in bounds and keep the play alive.

A handball was called against Houston after Maynor Figueroa touched the ball in the box. Kei Kamara took the penalty kick for Colorado and sent the ball to his right as Joe Willis dove the other direction. The goal ended their shut out but still left them down three goals with nine minutes left in the game.

After a VAR review Colorado’s Tommy Smith was issued a red card after kicking his legs from behind on AJ DeLaGarza. The red came in the 89th minute which left the Rapids down to 10 men for the last minute of regulation plus the five minutes of stoppage time.

Tommy McNamara found the net for the Dynamo during stoppage time but it was called back due to an offside goal. Even with that goal called back Houston was set with a huge 4-1 road win.

The Rapids dominated in shots as well finished the game with the lion’s share of possession. They had 20 shots in the game to Houston’s 10, but the final score line was what mattered. Houston historically struggles on the road and haven’t won a road game in Colorado in a long time. While this Rapids side still doesn’t have a win this season the three points could go a long way to building up Houston’s confidence for road games this season.

The Dynamo don’t play against until April 13 when they host the San Jose Earthquakes.

Pick the Houston Dynamo Lineup vs. the Colorado Rapids

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

After a brief break, the Houston Dynamo are back in action against the Rapids. Who do you think Wilmer Cabrera should start?

The Houston Dynamo are back in action this weekend following a brief break for international soccer. The Dynamo are off to a good start in the 2019 season with 2 wins and a draw which has them with the 3rd best record in the Western Conference. Their good start is more remarkable as they’ve done it with CONCACAF Champions League overlapping part of the early schedule. After getting eliminated by Tigres UANL, the Dynamo no longer have to manage difficult double game weeks and can keep their attention on the MLS regular season and their next opponent the Colorado Rapids.

Even with a little bit of rest due to the international break, the Dynamo are struggling with a few injuries notably to Juan David Cabezas, but also DaMarcus Beasley recently underwent surgery and will be out 4-6 weeks. Beasley has yet to feature for the Dynamo in the regular season, but has played in Champions League.

Up top for Wilmer Cabrera’s squad we can expect an important trio that is healthy in Romell Quioto, Alberth Elis, and Mauro Manotas. Manotas and Elis have both shown up so far this year with Manotas grabbing a pair of goals in 3 games with an assist and Elis getting a goal and a couple of assists (which means Quioto is due his soon). These three should do well against a Rapids side that’s allowed 8 goals so far, the third most in the league.

In the midfield, Tomás Martínez should be expected to start in the attacking most role. He’s missed some time this season after taking several knocks against Real Salt Lake in the season opener, but a little time off should have him well rested. Behind him, without Juan David Cabezas, who is expecting to get some playing time with the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros after traveling with them, Cabrera has deployed Matías Vera and Oscar Boniek García so look for those two. Cabrera could play Darwin Cerén over Boniek, but I think the veteran keeps his starting spot until Cabezas returns.

Defensively, without Beasley, look for Adam Lundqvist to start again at left back. Maynor Figueroa is listed on the Injury Report as questionable so I think Cabrera takes it easy on the 35 year old and starts Kiki Struna and Alejandro Fuenmayor in central defense. At right back, A.J. DeLaGarza should be ready to go with Joe Willis returning in goal.

Houston Dynamo face Colorado Rapids for the first time in 2019.

The Houston Dynamo head to Commerce City to take on the Colorado Rapids on Saturday. The cold and high altitude haven’t been friends to Houston as they have struggled to beat the Rapids on their home field. The weather man is currently calling for morning snow showers and temps at a high of 41.

The Dynamo have had a mixed start to their season going 2-1-0 in MLS and crashing out of the CONCACAF Champions League. They were eliminated from the CCL tournament after losing back to back games to Mexican powerhouse Tigres. They followed up the elimination with a 3-2 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps two weeks ago. Homegrown midfielder Memo Rodriguez opened up scoring in the 15th minute of the game and would go on to score a brace in the game. The two goals helped him to a three goal total so far this season which makes him the goal leader at the club as well as ties him for first in the league for goals. Each side was awarded a penalty kick in the game that lead to a goal for each. Houston’s Alberth Elis also scored in the game to help the team to three points.

The Rapids have had a rougher start to their season as they are still looking to get their first win of 2019. They are currently 0-2-2 and sitting in ninth place in the Western Conference standings. They are coming off a 2-1 road loss to FC Dallas. Michael Barrios scored in the 35th minute for Dallas to give them the first half lead. It wasn’t until the 69th minute that Tommy Smith was able to get the Rapids on the board. Unfortunately for the Rapids they couldn’t hold the draw as Ryan Hollingshead put in a rebound of Tim Howard in the 82nd minute to hand Colorado a loss.

The Dynamo need to take advantage of Colorado’s struggles to get going early in games. Colorado gives up a lot of possession at the start of games and while possession isn’t always the way to a win for the Dynamo they can still use it to their advantage. If they can create a quick attack that plays to their advantage they have the ability to jump out to an early lead.

The game kicks off at 8pm CT on Saturday night.
