Now that the palpitations have settled, and our eyes turn towards the northeast, I, like everyone else, can only think about the metaphorical use of jellyfish stings as they apply to the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

There were a couple strange thoughts that came into my head as I watched our second leg matchup against Sporting KC. They came 30 minutes apart, and once they popped into my head I was positive that they were the truth. That being said, they were both completely opposite of one another.

At the end of the first half, as SKC had just played 45 minutes in complete domination, but without a single goal, the camera panned to Jimmy Nielsen. The uber-Scandinavian man picked up his towel from the net, turned to the crowd behind him, and applauded as if he had just won the MLS Cup. Even though we were still up 2-0 on aggregate, and were 75% through the aggregate matchup, I was positive that we would give up two goals in the second half. It was horrible. I just... knew. It wasn't that we were defending poorly (on the contrary, we were playing really well given the circumstances) or that they had come excruciatingly close to scoring (Kamara...lol). I just saw the confidence in the goalie's eyes, and knew that same feeling radiated throughout the whole team.

But 30 minutes later, with no nails left on my hand, a funny thing happened - SKC scored. Zusi did what he had been doing all game, and would continue to do: he put a delicious ball into the box just begging someone to smash it in. And Sinovic did. You would think that the goal would have just compounded my woe, and driven me closer to the warm confines of bourbon on a school night, but it didn't. As Sinovic sprinted back to midfield, and spiked the ball at the center circle, I knew that we would prevail. There was an air of frustration in SKC's body language that reeked of unfulfilled entitlement. Thirty minutes later, after many obscenely-close attempts on goal, we won.

And my heartbeat slowly, but surely, returned to healthy levels of activity.

When I wrote a paragraph-long thought about the SKC series a week ago, I said that two things were certain - SKC would score, and our back line would have to hold on for dear life if we were fortunate enough to hold an aggregate lead before that. This bend, but not break, attitude was just what the doctor ordered (if you're a masochist), and has seen us once again into the Conference Finals.

The Science

Our success in this series came down to striking a damaging blow quickly, and holding on before SKC could return the favor. Similarly, the jellyfish depends on a potent neurotoxin to paralyze its much heavier prey before it can hurt it. The jellyfish may lose a tentacle or two, but sure enough its prey will eventually succumb to delicious sleep as the jellyfish weirdly digests the thing inside its head.

Each tentacle on a jellyfish is lined by hundreds of tiny nematocysts, which are just glorified biological harpoons. When something touches its trigger, there is a chemical reaction that shoots out a high velocity spear loaded with toxin. The jellyfish then drags in its prey. If you had any semblance of a childhood, you know exactly where I'm going with this:

That Time When The Radical Arsonist Became Chicago Fire Department Chief

Its always weird when a character from a show I love appears in something else. Sometimes its not that big of a deal - like when you see a character from one genre essentially playing the exact same character in another. A good example of that is HBO's use of Aiden Gilley as Tommy Carcetti in The Wire, a guy who sorta means well but is generally a jackwagon, and as Petyr Baelish in Game of Thrones, a guy who is a complete and total jackwagon. It makes sense. Two politically influential people who are doing what they deem profitable no matter what the consequences are for others.

But then there is Eamonn Walker, who played Kareem Said - by far my favorite character in HBO's OZ. He was a radical, modern, Muslim cleric trying to make a political difference while being held in the Oswald State Penitentiary. His crime? Setting a bomb to burn down a building. Cut to 2012, and Walker is now playing Chief Wallace Boden of the CFD. Fighting fires, etc etc. Sure, the self-righteousness and do-goodery are all the same, but it just strikes me as odd.

Music Video of the Week

I am quite literally running out of my apartment right now to drive to an Alumni Weekend event at Trinity University. Try as I might over these last few minutes, I haven't been able to think of an apropos music video to leave y'all with before my trip. So as the ultimate cop-out of the day, lets make this a Dynamo Theory community event - post what you think the music video should be, and why. Because...I'm too lazy. That's pretty much why.

Back to soccer...

We did what we needed to do against SKC - strike early and hold on for dear life. Now, while the Sporks are left peeing on their wounds, we have a short turnaround for the Eastern Conference Final. To get past DC, we'll need the same type of effort.

Sadly, I won't be present for the match Sunday, so no retrospective stories about verbally assaulting DC fans (probably for the best). However, I expect a full stadium to push our boys in orange to a big first leg aggregate lead.

The Houston Dynamo entered Wednesday night's match against Sporting Kansas City with a two goal aggregate lead in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. They knew what they had to do to survive. It took everyone and everything, but survive they did. Dynamo Theory examines the game as only Dynamo Theory can.

Is it possible to win by losing? We have certainly had our fair share of losses this season, not to mention draws, but no loss defined the Dynamo so clearly as did the one they sustained at Live Strong Park against Sporting Kansas City. In every facet, in every way, the Sporks dominated the Houston Dynamo.

Attempts on Goal: SKC - 20, Dynamo - 3
Corner Kicks: SKC - 5, Dynamo - 0
Open Play Crosses: SKC - 31, Dynamo - 1
Duels Won: SKC - 72, Dynamo - 58
Total Passes: SKC - 610, Dynamo - 240
Possession: SKC - 71.4%, Dynamo - 28.6%

It's plain to see the Dynamo were outmanned, outhustled, outgunned, outmaneuvered, out-pressured...just plain outplayed by Sporting KC. Yet even in the midst of the constant pressure, the constant deluge of shots and crosses and headers and saves, the team remained calm. They did not let the pressure of Sporting KC or the pressure of the moment deter them from their game plan.

Was it a sound game plan? Not in my mind, no. Yet, it worked. The Dynamo went into Live Strong Park and while they lost, they were ultimately the triumphant victors. The team knew what had to be done. They knew what was necessary to leave Live Strong Park with another two games, at the least, left to play. They knew what was necessary to survive.

Survival was the key to this game, the Eastern Conference Semifinals. It has been the key to the entire Houston Dynamo season. Game after game, we watched a team survive time and time again. How many times did we see the team down a goal only to scrape together a last few minutes of glory?

Yes, it is exactly as it has always been. Domination by attrition. We will outlast you. We will beat you mentally, beat you physically. You will submit. You will quit. You will give up. You will ask for mercy. We will survive, and you will not.

There is no coach in MLS who has the same ability as Dominic Kinnear to prepare his players for the playoffs. An entire season passes, and as seems to be the norm now, the Dynamo find a way in. And then good ol' Dom flips the switch. He green lights the players, the team. They find ways to make magic happen.

And while Sporting Kansas City definitely got theirs last night, ultimately, the Houston Dynamo got more. Sporks nabbed a goal in the 64th minute off a beautiful cross from Graham Zusi which found the diving head of Seth Sinovic. That, however, would be the only time the ball would find a place inside the net behind the brick wall known as Talmon Hall.

Doubtless in my mind is the Man of the Match. Saves abounded, and Tally was constantly having to make them.Make them he did, and as a result, when the final whistle had blown, the Dynamo parked their way into the Eastern Conference Finals.

The first leg of the Eastern Conference Finals is scheduled in Houston's BBVA Compass Stadium for Sunday, November 11th at 3:30PM CST. But such a day and time requires the weather in New York to offer a chance for NYRB and DCU to play out the second leg of their Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Either way, either team, the Dynamo will gladly welcome the rest. It has been a grueling last couple of weeks, and one extra day can mean the difference between MLS Cup Finals and going home.

Yes, Dynamo Theory faithful, it is entirely possible to win by losing. #NOODLETIME

While Sunday's 2-0 victory at home was a massive step in the right direction, this is far from over. Expect another postseason battle in Kansas City as both sides look to erase the past Wednesday night.

Well, they're halfway there now. The easy part was taken care of Sunday afternoon, when the Dynamo welcomed Sporting Kansas City into the first leg of their semifinal at BBVA Compass Stadium. Yes, the Dynamo won this leg 2-0, but there's still work to be done.

At 8 pm Central time on Wednesday night, the semifinal moves back to Kansas City's Livestrong Sporting Park, and you can rest assured that SKC will want to defend their home turf every bit as well as the Dynamo did. It's a notoriously hard place for a road team to play, but then again, history shows that Houston has often seemed to perform better there than most other road teams.

It's history here that both sides will be recalling - and for both teams, it's ambivalent at best. Certainly, Kansas City, who has talked of revenge almost ad nauseum to this point, will look to erase not only their deficit in this semifinal, but the ghosts of multiple playoff defeats at the hands of Houston - not only last year's Eastern Conference final, but also the one in 2007.

The Dynamo don't have nearly that kind of bad history to think about, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that some of the players feel that there's unfinished business at hand - a little less than eight weeks ago, an equalizer in the third minute of stoppage time meant that the Dynamo got only a single point out of Livestrong Sporting Park on a night when they probably felt that they deserved all three.

All in all, it makes for a compelling read. But keep this in mind: yes, there is a lot of history between the two teams, but it is all just that - history. Most of the history has no bearing on the second leg of this semifinal, so just file it away for now.

The only part of the history between the two teams that might possibly have any bearing on this match is the immediate history, from Sunday's 2-0 Dynamo victory. It was a physical match - as is often seen in the MLS playoffs. While in some cases, the referee allowed play to go on through some questionable non-calls, he also broke up the rhythm of play by virtue of even more questionable calls - most notably a yellow card given to Calen Carr for a foul on Kei Kamara that seemingly nobody but Kamara (and Edvin Jurisevic) felt was a foul.

Indeed, the style of play was such that Kansas City manager Peter Vermes felt the need to complain about physical play in his post match interviews, to the amusement and chagrin of most everyone in Houston (note to Vermes, when you have a team that plays fairly physically and features a number of players who love to go to ground, you don't complain about physical play).

Still, there was a marked difference between this Dynamo team and past ones - where teams in earlier years might have lost their cool and concentration, this one didn't (see also the Olimpia match at home for a similar type of match - that featured another highly questionable yellow to Calen Carr, as a matter of fact). Adam Moffat and Will Bruin instead let the scoreline do the talking, which is how the semifinal has gotten to the point it's at now.

While Sporting Kansas City will need two goals just to force extra time, it's not an impossible task - something that I'm sure Dom Kinnear remembers well, as the '04 Kansas City team did just that against San Jose in his first year as manager. For that reason, I'm not sure how much of a defensive mindset the Dynamo will utilize, if they do so at all.

With the exception of Jermaine Taylor, who is a game-time decision after leaving Sunday's match due to a knee injury, it's conceivable that no switches are made tactically by the Dynamo. While a two goal lead is immense, it is not always comfortable, and I'm sure the team would love nothing more than to add on to the aggregate early and put the match squarely out of reach.

Sporting Kansas City, on the other hand, seems to have no choice but to play aggressively, which could work either way. While it could possibly allow them to score early and gain a foothold to come back in, playing too aggressively leaves the door open for a counterattack, and could possibly result in a match that is even more physical than Sunday's, in which case cards and set pieces could play the decisive role in sending this semifinal one way or the other.

To make it even harder for Kansas City, however, they'll have to make do in midfield without injured midfielder Roger Espinoza, who has been ruled out. He played in Houston, but wasn't as effective as normal, eventually leaving for a substitute in the 77th minute. The cards are seemingly stacked against them, but nothing is ever certain in this sport (except for perhaps the highly opinionated outspokenness of Diego Maradona).

Make no mistake: the Dynamo are ahead, but this is not going to be easy. Expect a fight here, and be prepared for the battle à outrance that awaits tonight in Kansas City. With luck, the Dynamo will survive to play once more at BBVA Compass this Saturday against either the New York Red Bulls or D.C. United (their second leg starts an hour before ours, so we should know the opponent by the time our match finishes). It's time to feel that Orange Crush, guys. Let's do this.

MLS Soccer beat writer Darrell Lovell, who covers the Houston Dynamo, reported today that defender Jermaine Taylor practiced with the team. Yesterday, Taylor sat out of practice after leaving the Dynamo vs SKC game on Sunday with an apparent knee injury.

Coach Dominic Kinnear told Lovell while Taylor practiced, he'd be a gametime decision on Wednesday night.

Houston would more than likely slide Andre Hainault into the starting role, while rookie standout Warren Creavalle could make the final 18.

On November 4th, 2012, a lone fedora-wearing SKC fan made the poor decision of sitting in Section 210, surrounded by orange. What follows is a potentially sarcastic written letter of apology to said fan.

Hey there, Big Guy,

I like your hat. Some might say wearing a white fedora after Labor Day is a faux pas, but kudos for holding onto the things you love. You've shown initiative, and I respect that.

You may be wondering why you are receiving a letter from someone you've never met, and who has only seen the back of your fedora. Well, its because I feel like I need to explain some curious situations that arose this past weekend.

First, let me say "thanks" for your patronage at the most recent Houston Dynamo game at BBVA Compass Stadium. I hope you enjoyed the energy, fanfare, and quality soccer played on both sides of the pitch. It is great to see that The Cage is a place where both groups of supporters can enjoy an afternoon of sport.

On that note, let me call into question you decision to sit in our section. Not that it was (remarkably) hostile, its just that section 221 looked so blue, comfy, and welcoming. Your light blue madras shirt would've fit in so well, as opposed to the orange confines of 210. But, again, kudos to you. You've shown bravery in sitting in an anti-SKC section, as well as integrity in staying with your assigned seat.

I write to you in the hopes that you will forgive the unfortunate circumstances that occurred on Sunday, November 4th, of this year. What's that you say? You don't remember anything out of the ordinary?

Oh, nevermind then. Talk to you lat - No! - I can't let myself off that easy. Let me remind you.

You may have noticed that after Moffat's sublime finish, your shoes became suddenly soaked with beer. Perhaps, in those moments of concern for the 1-0 deficit that your team was suffering, you thought little of it. The stadium was rocking, and maybe the decibels ripping through the stadium had spilled a beer at your feet.

Or, you know, the drunk idiot behind you may have kicked it over, and in a fit of high fives, hugs, and primal yells, failed to notice it until half a liter of lime-infused Dos Equis had finished cascading around your seating area.

And in this confusion, you might have felt breath, spittle, or a rolled up poster scrape your fedora at some point. In fact, your ears might still be ringing, as the sincere question of "why are you sitting down?" were lobbed your way after both goals and during the introductions. Its not that the person (not me) was being too aggressive, or trying to intimidate you. On the contrary. I...err....he just wanted you to take full advantage of such a fun afternoon. Consider it encouragement, and not bullying. He just wanted you to stand up and take in the great sight of orange streamers covering the field after both goals.

Come to think of it, you didn't even bother to remove the orange poster from your seat. You just...sat on top of it. That couldn't have been very comfortable. Were you making a statement, saying you wont be shackled by the rules of an opposing franchise? Was that a subtle assertion of your sporky superiority? Maybe you were under the impression that it was a low-cost ergonomic addition to the seat? Or were you just too mesmerized by the overwhelming surroundings in El Banco to comprehend what you should be doing with your hands right then?

Either way, I hope you will forgive my transgressions. Maybe you've spilled a beer before, or yelled at a perfect stranger, unbeknownst to them. These things happen.

Those delightful Dos Equis blinded me to how much bigger you were than me. That could have been a problem if you ever realized who soaked your shoes in beer. Kudos to you for not retaliating... or reacting at all. Or...noticing...

You know what? Forget everything I said. Let me start over.

Hey there, Big Guy,

I like your hat.

Signed,

Jose de Jesus Ortiz posted on Twitter a short time ago that Jermaine Taylor did not practice with the team today. With only one full day of practice remaining before the Wednesday playoff match against Sporting Kansas City in the 2nd leg of the Conference semifinals, Taylor looks doubtful to play. Kinnear has been quoted as saying Warren Creavalle could find himself positioned in the 18, and we feel pretty confident in concluding Andre Hainault would start opposite Bobby Boswell at Center Back.
